W124 300 Gearbox difference

I am looking to replace the 4 speed auto gearbox on my 91 300TE24 as second gear on the box slips, and after running like this for the best part of a year it now no longer goes into third or fourth.

The gearbox number is 722359. I am looking for a second hand unit, some people are telling me that any W124 300 4 speed unit(12v or 24v) will fit. Others are telling me that only one with the same serial numbers will do.

Does anyone have any experience on this matter?

any will FIT - but the 359 has the correct ratios....

Thanks Guy, thats good to know. I guess the 24valve estate ratios are different to saloon and coupe, which will make it fun to search for.

I'm going to strip the auto box tonight and see if anything is amiss. It's already had filter and new transmission oil

If push comes to shove I have an excellent 4 speed auto box off a W201 2.6 (same as in 260E) spare.
