300E
Hi everyone, I'm new here and back in old Merc ownership after a few years. I've just bought a 1992 300E with 142K miles on the clock and in very good condition. One thing I'm having an issue with is the alternator is noisy and has appreciable end float in the pulley with the belt removed so time for a new alternator!
I thought of rebuilding the original Bosch with new bearings and regulator but I can't shift the pulley nut even with my biggest air gun so I think I'll give up and get a replacement. My question is can someone recommend a good replacement rebuilt supplier? There are plenty around on eBay etc but I'm worried about getting cheese junk and paying over the odds for a Bosch replacement seems wrong. I did a search on the forum but turned up no advice. Anyone have a recommendation? I'm located in the SE near Woking.

Cheers,

- Douglas

I used mister-auto.co.uk recently for a replacement Bosch alternator, there are a few listed for 300e between 80-120pounds depending on part number, they also sometimes have a 10% alternator discount promotion, you are surcharged 22 pounds or so to return old alternator but I didn't bother as it was £15 or more to post and their return place was in France.

My '91 300e's alternator started making a weird noise and the charge light came on. Next day I took it to a reputable auto electrician and they replaced the regulator as well as the alternator's bearings.

Cost ZAR1 300 (abt GBP70) and it now runs like a dream.

Yes, that's what I had done. Well worth it.
