Hi, Just managed to buy a very nice well maintained full MB service history 1991 300TD. All seems very good apart from the fuel gauge, it works but it seems to stick when it gets below 1/4 tank. I know the reserve light works as it comes at start and the dial does go down to empty when off so I guess its the fuel sender.
Can anyone one tell me where this is accessed from and will it cause any problems with air if I take it out service it or replace it.

Many thanks

Brett

Do you mean the car runs out of fuel at 1/4 of a tank....?

if so, i'd check the fuel strainer in the tank as it may look like the pic below. If it does it means it will die of fuel starvation at 1/4 of a tank when it starts to try and take the fuel via the strainer.

vs a brand new one (they can be cleaned though if you want to)

Thanks for the reply, No it dopiest run out the gauge just doesn't move when it gets below 1/4 tank and the light doesn't come on.

I think you need to go in from the top of the tank, through the boot floor to access the sender... someone else may be able to confirm that....

cheers

OK, that sounds logical I just didn't want to start taking things apart without knowing where to start.

good thread,

would my e220 petrol have this strainer? i was looking at my tank the other day located in the boot behind the rear seats and there seems to be somthing/somesort of sensor clipped in the middle of it?
