Had a replacement automatic transmission fitted a couple of weeks back. It came back to me changing up too late with the advice to run it for a couple of hundred miles to see if it settled down.
Cutting things short, it is now fairly consistently shifting up too early.
To save going back to the service garage I wanted to check where the adjustment is to see if I can set it at a normal level.
I get the impression that the shift points are set by a combination of control pressure cable and maybe vacuum?
How do I make adjustments?
I attach a pic of what I think is the pressure cable (amongst other bits).

Useful site that (W124 performance).
I tried adjusting the control pressure cable but there was no difference.
In addition to changing up too early I also noticed that I have no kickdown.
Whilst the number of possible factors at play here is not that great, I find the whole automatic gearbox thing very complex. A bit too complex in fact.

In the words of my local Auto Gearbox man, "Most of the faults we see are installation problems".

If the box isn't kicking down, try pushing the pedal to the floor & activating the kick down switch there. That should make it kick down. If it doesn't, the OVP relay fuses and kickdown (Klima) relay should be on the list of things to check

I'd hand it back to the gearbox man and ask for it to be returned when it's right

Yes, it'll be going back, was just hoping I could twirl a spanner and adjust it. :)

Don't mess with the linkage. It's difficult to get it right once you mess with it.

The issue will be on gearbox end.. Needs to go on a ramp.. Something isn't on right!

Control pressure cable adjustment always worked on my old auto in fact it was quite sensitive. There was a spec of a small amount of free play so that after the throttle started to open there was a delay before the control pressure cable started to move. From memory reducing the amount of free play would make it change up earlier.

Almost perfectly in the middle of the picture, in behind the two parallel metal pieces is a cable with a black adjuster thumb-wheel in between a boxing glove snap on piece to the left with its rubber bellows, and a yellow piece on the end of the cable sheath to the right. Turning the thumbwheel will alter the cable tension and hence the shift points. I can't remember off the top of my head what way it goes, clockwise or anti clockwise, to delay the shift. But you could try two turns either way and see the result. you won't damage anything - it is fairly safe to play with...

Thanks. Adjusting the pressure cable seemed to make no difference, which adds weight to the issue being somewhere else. Seems a bit beyond me and will take the car back...

I had the same problem- E280 5 speed auto- new gearbox fitted and it wasn't kicking down- took it back to specialist and fixed while u waited- was something simple to those in the know- good luck

This is the other en of that cable...
