I would just appreciate a little information

What mpg would you get from a W124 320 Coupe
Mostly country roads...........probably never above 60mpg
Carefully (mature) driver

Vehicle in good mechanical nick - 150,000 miles

Cheers

If you drive a 124 320 fuel economy should not be an issue. They are not bad at all. Around town expect below 20.

Thanks - I have been looking at one which I fancy - one of the latest models, (2nd face lift).

Any problems that the E320 has which the E280 does not have, (as you can see I have an E280)

Thanks again

Breaking up engine wiring loom and head gaskets are the main issues as are worn suspension ball joints, broken springs etc etc.

Make sure that the air con (if fitted)gas is R134 not R12 which is now illegal.
Examine the seat belt extenders, make sure that they both work and that the bottom of the seat belts are still affixed to springs
Lamination of the front and rear screens can be unsightly, a little would (for me) be acceptable.
The manual seats have a habit of sticking in the rearward position, can be awkward to adjust.

My e320 coupe did between 26 and 30mpg - not much town driving though. 30 was about the best it got to with longer journeys. Very acceptable I thought considering the 220bhp available.
The e320 cab used a bit more fuel; 2 -3 mpg worse, I guess thats the extra weight?

I recently did a brim to brim check on 230 miles driving over 4 days on a trip up to and around Herefordshire from berkshire and achieved 32.7mpg. in my 320 coupe.

No undershields fitted to car and wider wheels and tyres.

Car in good mechanical condition with 167,000 miles on it.

No aircon used and fully synthetic oil in engine to reduce internal friction.

4 speed auto gearbox and it was in position E.

Mine has averaged 26.44 mpg over the 8.5 years I've owned it (all purchases recorded and mileage noted in a spreadsheet). At times, the rolling average for six fill-ups has reached the high 20s, courtesy of a series of long trips. Individual trip mpg has gone past 30 on several occasions. Aircon always on; the average increased after installing a Kenlowe engine pre-heater; Mobil 1; 5-speed box usually in E(conomy) rather than S(tandard) mode; undershield and mudflaps. Delivered Feb 1996.

Watch out for inevitable corrosion of front wings, and possible corrosion around the antenna aperture and the back edge (and perhaps other edges) of the sunroof aperture. Also, listen/feel for propshaft or other rear-end vibrations at 50mph upwards; my mechanic reckons the UJ at the front end of the rear half of the propshaft has too much play in it and a lump in its travel, so we're looking for a good used one currently, having recovered from the MB price of £448+VAT for a new one. A new propshaft hanger seems to have made the vibration worse.

At 61k I have yet to experience loom problems; my mechanic confirmed again last week that he could find no deterioration in the loom, even after I told him I feel like the only late-model W124 owner to be free of it, judging by what I see reported here and on all the other boards.

Great car. Health problems forced me to SORN it for the winter. When I got it back on the road, I fell in love with it again and reinforced my determination to keep it for as long as I can drive it, so I'm happy to spend on repairs and replacements as investment in long-term ownership, and to hell with the resale value.

Thanks again everyone for your very useful comments

I'll keep you posted if I get one

Regards

I don't think I ever bettered 27mpg, and that would have been on a long motorway run.

usually closer to 22/23, and around town I was at 17/18

I have a 1994 320 CE 5 speed which I always keep in 'S'. I've not done the mpg maths but aim to get 400 miles from a tank on a 'run' and c.320 around town. (It's also currently for sale on autotrader)

I have a 96 e320 cab and like you have had the wiring loom very carefully inspected - no sign of any problems at all. So that makes 2 of us.

In my E320 I can get about 230 miles around town (enjoying the car) but it has been known for me to get about 400 miles from a tank with motorway driving (tryign to keep it around 65/70mph).

Its a fun car but if you are worried about petrol costs then don't get one.

It's something you want to keep once you've bought it and even though it'll be replaced towards the end of this year/early 2010 with the new E-class coupe E350cdi i don't think i'll be able to part with it. It'll stay on the drive as a fun car. The lack of traction control in mine can be a bit of fun at times!

I prefer the manual seats to electric ones, both this car and my previous CLK270 are both manually adjusted. I'm a bit wary of potentially trapping a passenger in the back if the electrics go awry. It's personal choice though.

Good luck with your search!

Regards,

KJ

Hi I have a late e320 coupe, i get around 240 miles on a tank based on my daily commute to work (no long runs all stop start traffic). On long runs I can get over 300 miles out of a tank as long as you stay below 3500rpm in 5th gear. so any driving over 85mph will involve oliver reed style consumption but if you are doing 130mph plus on a german autobahn, the consumption issue isnt really worth thinking about.
thanks

Paul

Further to my post above, the most I've got out of a tankful was exactly 400 miles; it's usually around 350±20. If I can't avoid a short trip, I lengthen it to 10 miles or so. My driving style is gentlish and I cruise with the rest of you at 80ish on the motorway. The Kenlowe pre-heater improved fuel consumption by well over 1mpg on average. I use cruise control most of the time.

Quite a few posts in the past regarding this, Bill.

I have previously confessed that I keep a little book  from which I see a record 411.9 miles from a tankful - 34.2 mpg and a low of 240.8 miles @ 18.6 mpg.

Over 36750 miles, the present average is 27.7 mpg - and rising, as I no longer commute or drive in town.

I've easily seen 491 miles out of mine (mostly motorway/fast 'A' road) just before the warning light came on...

...I suspect it has something to do with 90L fuel tank my coupe was originally specced with :thumb:

I think this works out at around 28mpg

I have managed a trip from london to bristol and two trips from London to coventry on a full tank. My car too has the 90l tank but it was motorway driving with the cruise at 70-75 mph.

"I think this works out at around 28mpg "

90L = 19.8 gallons

Minus reserve 9L(?): 81L = 17.82 gallons

491/17.82 = 27.55 mpg

I'm envious of your 90L tank. When I bought my Coupé, retrofitting a larger tank was my first question -- impracticable, of course. I was missing the 500-mile range of my old Audi 100.
