W124 5speed auto box compatibility

Hi, I've been offered a 5speed auto which is known good and I have a 5speed in my car but are all the 5speeders interchangable both mechanically and electrically or did they change them as they went along?

E280 and E320 5-speed boxes are different. I would expect pre and post-facelift boxes to be different as well

Why do you want to swop it? Because your box won't go into 4th? I'd make a small wager that a replacement box will do exactly the same thing - it's a control problem, not a box problem

Thats interesting, how are they different from the E280 and E320? AFAIK there was only 1 722.5?
