Well, I dont know if it ever worked since I have the 220E... :dk:

As I see it, the AC fan (in front of the condenser) should engage under 2 circumstances:

1 - Very high engine temp;
2 - A few seconds after turning the AC on.

To check if the motor was OK, I shorted the plug that connects to the engine temp valve and the fan started right up.

The silver relays, on the relay box, are OK.

Any other bit I'm missing here? :wallbash:

It won't run (the fans and the whole system) if you have no/low gas so as to protect the system.

Thanks for your reply.

The AC compressor engages fine and blows cold air... there's no problem with the AC system itself, as the compressor clutch engages and disengages normaly.

could the fan resistor, near the driver headlight, be the culprit? Its the one thing that I havent checked yet... :wallbash:

On my last car air con fans only ever come on when 1, engine to hot or 2, when ambient temp very hot to assist air con cooling, ie wont come on unless very hot outside suppose merc poss the same?

Did anyone ever solve this?

My w124 E220 has the same problem -

The Electric Fan does not come on when the Air Con is switched on:wallbash:

Any ideas:dk:

Thank you in anticipation.....

I am not convinced this is a problem. On our s124 the aircon works fine but the fans only come on when its really hot or has been stationary for some time with the engine running.

Yea I left the car running stationary with the Air Con on - the auxiliary fan didn't come on........

I think the outside air temp needs to be hot aswell. If the aircon works properly I would not worry about it.

GP801 than you for your replies.
What I really wanted was for someone to help me in troubleshooting the problem of the Auxiliary Fan not coming on.
It is there for a reason.
Anyhow I have tested the fan (it works).
I have discovered a burnt out resistor & ordered a replacement from MB.
Hopefully this will sort it out :)

I am glad you have found something. I know how annoying it is when you are not sure if something is working properly. I used to think ours might have been faulty as it never seemed to come on then one very hot day stuck in traffic in Rome it did. Have to say it still very rarely cuts in. Good luck with the resistor.

Just a quick update. Just returned to ours in Italy. Started first time after 2 months unused. It is hot - over 30 celsius. The fans cut in virtually as soon as the car is stationary. It must be the outside temperature that is a major factor here.

Mine is now sorted:bannana:

Colder than a Polar Bears dangly bits in a snowstorm:rock:

Exactly the same with mine here, it normally only kicks in in traffic in moderate heat, but in our summer weather which today is 34 degrees it is pretty near instantaneous.
