I just took out the front carpets, to clean and dry them and noticed that the accelerator pedal isn't fixed to anything at the hinged (floor) end.

The pedal has a smallish "U" shaped metal piece attached at the end and it looks as if this should be attached to the floor but it isn't.

Should it be attached and in what kind of configuration?. It doesn't look as if there's a natural place for it.

I was very pleased to note there was no rust under the mats at least :)

Well, I just had a better look at it and it looks like I've found the answer. The metal "U" piece looks as if it's meant to be fixed to the floor at its open end but has come loose.

Although the floor itself isn't rusty, there is a little rust at the point this part would join it. Presumably, years of wet feet on the accelerator caused it and weakened the join. All I need to do now is figure out how to fix it back down :(

Must say that nobody has helped you on this one, perhaps this new post will bring some replies.

Will take a photo of mine for you if you think it willl help...

You may need to resort to using some chemical metal or something to re-attach the connector to th efloorpan if it has come adrift.

Thanks Spike, a photo may help. And I was thinking perhaps plastic padding or similar as a fixative since I'm not sure I'd want a welder working at such a small area and thin metal.

I'm afraoid this is not a solution. I've just encountered the same problem, though more serious as the u shaped bit actually pushed through a hole in the floor. Odd, as the rest of the car is virtually rust free. So I am interested to learn what causes this problem, whether it is common, and whether there is a standard fix (such as a replacement bracket from MB)?

One thing to check is the hole at the side of the footwell (inside sill) through which cables pass. You will need to remove carpet and maybe underseal/rubber . Water was getting in through there on mine (a few gallons in fact) due to a missing grommet on the underside of the sill! Cables also looked badly at risk of cutting through as there was no protective grommet. This is awkward to get at as the cables sit in a plastic tray (which can be removed with care).

If it helps, MB have sent me an exploded view of the accelerator. Unfortunately this only shows all the linkages down to the end of the pedal and does not show the U piece which is welded to the floor. Also under the U piece is a sort of brass pivot. This seems to be intact but in contact with nothing. A bolt passes through this to secure the underbody panel protector.

I'm as interested as you in a solution, so will watch this post. I'm particularly looking for a diagram of the method of attachment and support at the floor end. Let me know if you want the doc format diagram. Looks like a job for welding (U bracket onto a plate), followed by metal epoxy onto a repaired floor in my case!

Interesting one. Sorry, I can't be any more help here though as the car, in question, failed its MOT shortly after this Post. The back end was rotten with rust but beneath the underseal, where it couldn't be seen.

I scrapped it and have had my W201 for over a year now. Hopefully, someone will be along with helpful advice soon but you seem to be on the right track anyway.

Edit: Just noticed, this was your first post. Welcome to the forum

had the same issue on my W123, i had to have the whole area rebuilt with custom plates made up back in 2001...
