Another question I’m afraid, would anyone know which manufacturer made the original condenser for a 1996 e220 c124 and if they are silly prices can any recommend an alternative. Thank you.

Look if that was my car I would look for a car air con specialist, they are about, they do nothing but air con many repair compressors and will also be able to get a condenser if that is whats wrong, apart from actually testing and filling your system correctly

Are you sure it is a compressor at fault as that is going to cost al lot? What's it doing or not doing?

Many 124s were retrofitted with Davia air con systems by the UK dealers - it was cheaper than the factory option. Not sure if the condensors and compressors are the same as MB parts - but don't think they are.

Thank you all, turns out I had my wires crossed it’s the compressor I need!! Yes I know, so if you would be so kind could anyone recommend which compressor I should fit? Sorry for my errors and thank you all for your help.

You're near me. I would 100% recommend MB Automotive in Loughborough.

I've been discussing my aircon with them and they also have a dedicated specialist who helps with the specialist bits of the aircon.

My issue has been with the condenser (not compressor) but they were very sure on the point with the condenser that they really really wanted to fit Mahle, which was original fit on a lot of Mercs and the quality of the premium OE line by Mahle is the most trouble free. (my factory fit was Denso, but MB Automotive still recommended Mahle).

If you can, I'd suggest you book in with them, and get them to have a look and see what they recommend.

The fault finding on mine was around a very reasonable £30 on this occasion.

I do notice that there is an Elstock compressor on Autodoc for around £210 with a high 30% discount (need to wait for a good offer). Elstock do a lot of manufacturing, and as an example are one of the best manufacturers of unbranded Brembo brakes in Europe (e.g. for the w211 E-Class).

Given the prices differences, it might be worth discussing the compressor options with MB Automotive. They have always been very approachable when I've dealt with them, especially the main front man called Ed.

Hello and thank you for your help, I spoke to MB automotive back in March when I purchased the car but they seemed to be shying away from the W124 due the lack of diagnostic kit. I wasn’t at the air-con stage at that point though, have you any experience of Silver Star in Rothley?

Have you found out if it is the factory MB aircon or after market Davia? I am pretty sure that the Davia ones used to seize up and shred the belt in the process - leaving the car stranded. If it is the Davia unit I don't think there are any spares available now; maybe you can fit the MB one - not sure.
Does the centre button in the car have EC on it?

Yes I have an EC button on the dash.

Well, if you think they are shying away from the W124, I'd just have a straight conversation with Ed about it and put that to him in as open and friendly was as possible. He's always been 100% straight with me and I've always had a good service (saying this as someone probably much more knowledgeable than most about spannering and oily bits). They have also never charged me for unnecessary work, and have strongly recommended me away from additional work I was thinking of having.

I haven't used Silver Star, and until you have just mentioned them, I can't believe I had never actually heard of them!
