The Bonnet release pull handle had broken on my 300CE.

I bought a new one on EBay - £4.75 - made by Febi in Germany - looked good.
(when I told them about the problem, they gave me an immediate refund)

I replaced the part and the first time that I "pulled it" it snapped

The metal catch on the bonnet is not particularly stiff and I did not use undue force.

I will try a MBZ genuine part

Looks as this is a common problem, (judging by the number of new replacement parts available on EBay).

Has anyone else had this problem?

(poor) photos below - EBay and then the part after it was fitted

Thanks

I think the MB part is about the same price...

I replaced mine and its been fine.

For parts I'd always start with MB and then check against other stuff, as for most of the small items I've bought the difference in price is minimal.

When you get to bigger bits like radiators and suspension wishbones, pattern parts start to look a little more attractive.

just bought the same from the MBZ dealer, plus a paint stick and a new "triangle" for the seat belt

as you say very similar prices to aftermarket stuff

my one (original I think) snapped on my W124. I ordered one from ebay for about a fiver inc. P&P and it too snapped within a few uses. It was sent back and a very apologetic e-mail was sent, followed by a replacement handle. I fitted the new one and tried it to see if it worked....it snapped. I gave up and put it down to experience. I found a black cable tie works just a well, but a trip to the MB parts dept. will follow soon I'm guessing if they are as cheap.
Last month, I needed a metal o ring for the joint between the cat and my centre silncer. The companies on ebay could only supply a kit (around £14-16), which I didn't need, only the o ring. Bit the bullet and went to MB. Imagine my surprise when I was quoted £3.27 inc VAT for exactly the part I wanted. I agree, sometimes it pays to visit MB first to get a ball park figuire and then take it from there. The cable tie trick worked fine, which is why I never tried MB, but I will this week!

trouble is that those atractive lower prices lose their appeal when the part breaks and causes the job to be done again......or the job takes twice as long because the part does not quite fit. Sometimes better just to bite the bullet on some parts.

I did not particularly buy it for the price - it was £4.75 mailed to me - german made by Febi.

I think that the MBZ one is maybe £6.??........but I have to collect as the Dealer will not take my PIN over the phone - (well stores say that they will not), and also they did not seem too keen to post it.....therefore 40 min round trip to collect....time, petrol!!
