A few months ago, just after I bought my W124 cabriolet, I renewed the seat belt extender guide on the drivers side because it was showing signs of wear and in fact the previous owner had stapled it together to stop it falling apart !!!.
I can now see why he didn't replace it !
It seems that the seat belt webbing cuts through the corner of the rubber (plastic ?) guide as it slides backwards are forwards when it is extended and the belt now gets caught in the slit !
As anyone got a suggestion how I can prevent this ?

You can't. Just buy a new one. They are only pennies.

I think some of your problem is possibly due to how much tension is on the bottom part of the belt where it attaches to the floor. If that is adjusted too tightly it "pulls" the buckle into the triangular aperture and cuts the plastic. Slacken that off if you can (can be a problem as it is tensioned) and you should solve the problem. failing that they are 7 quid from a dealer

Curiously, my guide is perfect, but the belt is a bit frayed....

bet you are like me; once the arm is extended do you pull the belt forward first and then clip the buckle in? when passengers get in for the first time they always pull diagionally across (as is natural) the chaest and the belt wears against the side of the triangle - i end up feeling foolish for getting so irritated by this - I have to remind myself its a really cheap part!

Ah grasshopper you have travelled far on the path of life

Probably designed by Mercedes to wear rather than fray the belt? Its a nuisance but its easy to replace. All that remains grasshopper is to master the intricacies of the seatbelt "coiled spring thingy" Try if you will to imagine you have 3 hands and a bent bit of wire. All will be revealed ;)

Coiled spring thingy

Actually I've mastered that by using a small block of wood with two nails !

The plastic is designed to wear rather than the belt...

I replaced mine a year ago and its now about 1/3 through again... The wear seems to take place when I pull the belt through the extended arm when I buckle up. Should perhaps slow down a bit..

The part is about £7 from MB and easy to replace except for the coiled spring bit at the floor which exploded on mine when I unbolted the belt.. never to work again...)

Actually re reading that, presumably you mean you made a tool to put the spring back in place rather than nailing the belt back to the floor :D

Might try that.. not nailing the belt to the floor I mean..

Any ideas how much the entire assembly is (a fair bit more than 7 quid I guess)? The passenger's guide recently failed on my 220CE, it seemed to have a bit of a fit, extended all the way out and then kept going! Then it wouldn't go back in, so I had to "persuade" it and it hasn't worked since (unsurprisingly...). My missus is getting annoyed at having to retrieve her own belt so I need to do something soon!

I presume it's going to be a s*d to fit as well?

cheers,
Toby.

yeah those are the bits, I don't know which "bit" has actually failed though unfortunately.

anyone know a good independant Merc specialist in the South West (Devon)? I've got a few other issues as well, drivers window needs a new motor and the sunroof doesn't tilt on the right, tilts on the left and slides fine, just doesn't tilt on the right!

cheers,
Toby.

Yeah I found that, thanks, sent them some questions on their contact page!

He only charges £17.50 to plug you into STAR

<ignorance mode> Is that good? I have to admit I have no idea what STAR is unfortunately... </ignorance mode>

I like this forum! Much better than the Talbot Sunbeam one I signed up to on Monday, that requires admin registration and I'm still waiting for it! :-(
