W124 Cabrio Big Single Turbo

You will need a dump valve for sudden throttle closings, but don't have to vent to atmosphere.

They have a standard dump valve anyway which will be fine for the power but what I meant was it wont be a atmospheric one :thumb:

Yeah was going to go with something from a bigger engine, it should handle okay with the suspension upgrades (springs/shocks anti rollbars etc) they have extra stiffening bars underneath anyway, wether they help or not i will find out:confused:

I think it will be a bit floppy and you'll have to chase the steering wheel across the dashboard in rough bends.

I once drove an XR-Free-I Cab, and thought the steering wheel was alive.

I know where you are coming from but don't think it will be too bad as they are quite solid/strong cars also use the same steering box system as c36/43 so shouldn't be too floppy, and I don't think you can compare it to a xr3i lol

The car isn't going to be a track toy just a everyday fast street car

I meant the body will flex and suffer scuttle shake, especially if you fit taughter suspension.

Yes you are right it will flex a a bit and won't be as rigid as a solid roof car since its a Cabrio, I could have done it in a coupe but don't think it will be as fun nor would it look as good ;)

IMHO Sportline cabs aren't as nice as standard ones. I'd leave everything well alone and see how it feels. Making the suspension stiffer will just move the problem elsewhere and make the car nastier to drive

interesting thread, cant wait to see how it all pans out.

I'm almost more impressed that you've managed to find a 20 year old merc with no rust.

Looking good, great to see something different going under the bonnet.:thumb:

Update

Hi been a short while since I updated the thread,

Engine has now been installed as well as the turbo and is running, I haven't ran it for long as I have no gauges setup yet, I had a custom manifold made by Imran @ Torqueflow exhausts, pictures paint a Thousand words so .......

Front mount sump from a Lexus Gs300 to clear the subframe

Engine bay all cleaned up and ready for the engine

Poor picture but gearbox mount holes had to be slightly modified as the didn't line up

Engine sitting in place :D

Radiator and Intercooler in place just to get a feel of how much space I had to play with

Forgot to take a picture of before I butchered the Propshafts
So here are the unneeded bits

propshaft mocked up temporarily so I can get a custom one made and balanced

Hole was made in the bulkhead for the ECU and loom as its not really a waterproof unit And there is more space in the footwell for it and for the piggyback ECU when it comes!

Original Bosch fuel pump and filter

Unfortunately I did not take a comparison photo of the two fuel pumps next to each other:dk: this is the new one known as a Bosch 044 it flows 300lph where as the original flows around 130lph

I had custom flanges made for manifolds

Manifold in progress

Forgot to take a proper picture of the final product but he did a awesome job on it, also went for a log style manifold simply because the lack of space and also since it is a big turbo it should spool it slightly faster than a tubular manifold. Turbo mounted up

I decided that I will go for a external wastegate rather than the internal wastegate, internal wastegates are good however since it is a big turbo sometimes you can get boost creep, also the actuator that was fitted to it opened at circa 25psi:eek:

So welded the internal gate fully closed

Since the turbo came from a tractor I had a quick measure up of the exhaust flange it was circa 3.5" so I ordered a 3.5" v-band/flanges, once they arrived I realised they were too big, :fail so got Imran to weld up the new flange over the old exhaust flange :thumb:

This is the new wastegate toyosport a 46mm 4bolt flange

And fitted to the manifold

And a video, excuse the commentary  (without wastegate fitted and no gaskets exhaust etc)

Enjoy

It was only the other day I saw it & now it's running. Well done, can't wait to see the end product.

Just came across this thread, great stuff...:thumb::thumb::thumb::bannana:

Sorry not updated this in a while its been hectic at the workshop, I will update the pictures soon, the car is currently running fine, it has a fueling issue within the tank, the return line in the tank is below fuel level so when the fuel is returning it is pushing through the fuel this is causing unstable fuel pressure, however its currently mapped running 410 bhp at 1.3 bar.

It is now running a smalller Turbo as the HX40 16cm was too laggy, it now has got a HY35 10cm and is less laggy :)

the car still looks the same, updates will include E63 Amg calipers, Air ride suspension, Full Amg Kit.....
