I have temporarily inherited a W124 E220 cabrio. 1 owner on a P plate with 70,000 miles. Nice car but needs some TLC. I've installed Audio10 Cd on it (No comand) but one thing niggles me. The aerial. Does it or is it supposed to retract all the way down or should there be about 1.5" of it sticking up?

Anyone with a W124 Cabrio know the answer?

all the way for sure.... its probably sticking.. try cleaning with some spray grease or 3in1 oil.

A new mast (Hischmann) is about £20 IIRC :)

If you manage to free it up and get it moving after using WD-40 etc, make sure you wipe off all traces of grease/oil afterwards - the mast should be dry and not oily as this is what makes them stick afterwards (the oil attracts dust/dirt etc). No need for oil as the mast is chrome plated.

Sorry man, that just made me laugh out loud!

Ditto about not oiling the mast. The merc wipes are infused with silicone as a lubricant. If you have furniture polish with silicone in it, you can spray that on a kitchen towel and you should be set.

Hi,
It could be the mast has been replaced with one from another vehicle as I believe the lengths differed between the various types of Hirschmann/Bosch aerials fitted to this era MB.

If its a Hirschmann it will (usually) have a code stamped in the flat tip of the aerial - this can be checked on the website against the aerial model on the motor case to make sure its the right one.
