Can anyone tell me if a UK spec 1992 W124 200TE has a catalytic convertor as standard? I know my '94 E220 has one but not sure of the earlier models :(

Here is a quote from the MOT testing manual...

"The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most class IV spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992."

So yes, a 1992 registered car will have a cat as standard. K reg Onwards.

Thanks Tiff, I suppose that means that MB could have sold cars without a cat until August but did they actually do this or were cats fitted as standard even before they were legally required?

It did happen that cars were sold right up to the cut off date,at big discounts, and if I remember some cars were exempt for a while . A cat isn't actually a legal requirement, just that the car can meet the emissions by whatever means, but all the manufacturers went down this route. I have had a few cars pass the emissions test without a cat..I could even get my 1984 Fiat X1/9 through a cat test with careful adjustment.. my Volvo 850 also passed without a cat. Many manufacturers were working on lean burn technology around this time..Ford and Toyota in particular, but the cat seemed to be easier and cheaper..a cop out really- a cat is just a filter .
