First of all I would like to say hello as I have only just recently become an MB owner for the first time (W124, 1989 300D saloon), and this is my first post!
Basically, I have a problem with the analogue climate control fitted to the car.. Since purchasing it, it appears to be stuck on the hottest setting, and doesnt change when I move the temperature controls.
First of all I checked the fuses, and notice fuse number 8 had blown. I replaced and turned on the ignition... I think the mono valve governing coolant flow to the heater activated. Unfortunately, after about 30 seconds (not enough time for the engine to heat up so couldnt evaluate whether it had worked)... there was a strong burning smell and smoke started coming throught the central air vents so I quickly shut off the ignitiion and removed fuse 8 again.
Does anyone have any ideas where the fault lies, or the best course of action to take in fault finding? My initial thoughts is that the CC control unit has shorted out / failed and I was going to remove the centre console and take a look at it (I assume it is located here - the haynes manual makes no mention of it!).
Any help on this is much appreciated!
Richard
