For all would be v8 transplant enthusiasts out there who havn't seen it, this is the most detailed ( high quality pictures ) thread I have seen. Its on the www.500ecstasy.com site by Satish Tummala.

http://www.500ecstasy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3918
and details the body mods required -including a new front cross member and new secondary bulkheads. enjoy

ps dont be put off by the initial post talking about forum registration to see the pics just scroll on down and you can see the later pics as a visitor.:D

I think the same project is also described on this web site http://www.motorwerksgroup.com/p8/ click on the individual pictures to enlarge them.

Heres one on another board on a 400CE v8 coupe transplant. You will have to register to see the pictures on this one. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/1241274-going-v8-400ce.html

apologies if anyone has posted these already.

Why , oh why did MB never do this themselves ....

Just checked that front cross member part A 124 620 6586 described as " front axle support" on the 500E parts listing here http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...722.365370&CT=F&cat=44S&SID=62&SGR=030&SGN=02

The firewall pieces are:

124-626-30-76 - right firewall
124-620-41-78 - left firewall
note these would probably need modification for RHD conversions

see http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...722.365370&CT=F&cat=44S&SID=62&SGR=045&SGN=03

The insulation pieces are:

124-680-50-25 - right insulation
124-682-87-60 - left insulation

PLUS these memorable quotes from Satish to dispel some common myths!!

First, let's once and for all dispel all the rumors on what had to be done to the W124 to accommodate the M119 engine.
NONE, either Porsche nor Mercedes-Benz splayed any frame rail to fit the motor and trans. The ONLY modifications were those done to the cross member housing the engine mounts, the left and right firewall pieces, and the structural members that tie the base of each firewall piece into each respective frame rail (these are seen in the photos).
I have the structural schematic of the 500E and the E320, there simply aren't any framerail mods. Also, I have fitted the M119 engine and 722.370 transmission into the vehicle to make sure of the fact. Again, NO mods were done by Porsche/MB to the vehicle's framerails.

The tunnel was not widened. What people are calling the tunnel is only the area near the bell housing, where the downpipes go in front of the firewall. With the modified, 500E firewall, everything has room. If you look at the dimensional schematics, the actual driveshaft/transmission tunnel is exactly the same. Also, to make room for long cats, etc., you would NARROW the tunnel to make more room for such items. Cats and exhaust go on either side of the tunnel, not in it. The wider the tunnel, the less space for exhaust.
