Now then.....

I'm going to view (well, no I'm not, I'm going to BUY it because its a steal) a '91 230CE tomorrow.

It looks very nice, straight rust free body, tidy interior & engine bay and it runs perfectly.....except for the gearbox.

The 4 speed auto won't engage fore or aft drive, apparently there's a clunk when engaging park (as you'd expect) but apart from that the revs just rise without there being any motion.

Now, should I:

A: fill my pants and run away?
B: change the fluid & filters & pray?
C: take it to a tranny specialist?
D: buy a good used box for a couple of hundred quid and fling that in?

Tbh I'm getting it for virtually nothing and I've always been a fan of these, so even a fresh 'box would surely make it worthwhile?

Then all I've got to do is decide whether to keep it or move it on.

Any thoughts?

Or is there a glaringly obvious solution I've been overlooking?

Bear in mind I've not actually seen the car yet.....

check gearbox oil level usually this happens if it is low.
otherwise used tranny and u need to put new filter and oil as a matter of course

Well.......

I bought it any way as I'm a sucker and I really like the W123 & W124 coupes.

It has been stood for 4 months after being taken as a PX but still started straight away.

Engine missing. Noisy as hell. Rattling from underneath when shifting between gears. Hmmmm.....

Bonnet up, nothing to see here except some mayo in the oil filler cap.....and grey sludge in the header tank...... Double hmmmmmm.....

I was then presented with the exhaust back box which had apparently 'dropped orft' when they put it on the transporter.

So I thought I'd look under the car to see if any more of the exhaust needs replacing to see the rear driveshafts merrily revolving on tickover as the car is in D......

Yes, it needs a 'zorst from the manifold back.

And the drive shafts reconnecting. Gearbox oil is lower than minimum but lovely and clean red :)

It's had 2 new front wings in the past and a blowover (not the best) but it can be flatted back after I've repaired the pinholes in the front wheel arches.

Bits of trim knackered but not missing, centre console cracked.... drivers seat bolster holed (as per) it's a 124000 mile example in black with grey cloth interior and genuine alloys.

All the electrics work, albeit the windows are a tad slow and it's got good rubber all round. It's had new callipers and pads to the front & pads to the rear.

My investigations are continuing but for what I bought it for (including delivery) was an absolute steal!

Permission to look smug Captain Blackadder?

Here's a dancing banana.....:bannana:

Good luck to you Sir. Sounds like a great project. Please do keep us updated on any progress.
