This crash happened in ireland at the weekend. Head on collison between a mondeo and a w124. 3 guys in the modeo died and the guy in the w124 only suffered a broken hip!

Yeah, but that photo does not show the passenger side of the 124, if anyone had been sitting there they were dead for sure, there were 4 in the Mondeo, 1 in the 124, 1 survived in the Mondeo.

I personally was surprised with how badly the 124 stood up to the impact, I was planning on buying one myself, I'm in two minds now.

I always find "post accident" photos a bit misleading because they are invariably taken after the attending accident unit has "dismantled" the car to extract the injured. I'm not disputing either conclusion since I havent seen any more photos but sometimes the damage appears greater than it was immediately post accident.

German Mondeo I see, maybe confused by driving on the left. Very sad for all those related.

I think the W124 stood up very well.

Your probably right. Stick with the Marea.

As I said, on that side the 124 stood up well, passenger side where the impact appears to have been heavier is worse, a lot worse. The German reg car was overtaking a truck at the time.

Yeah ....

I wouldn't buy one either ... they're crap ...... ;)

In such a collision very few vehicles would have resisted. If we say that both cars were travelling at 50mph that's a 100mph collision...

Id say the w124 for its age held up very well - the driver survived aswell

I've watched the video but given that the driver of the w124 survived that would indicate that the impact was possibly more offset to the passenger side of the vehicles. In turn that should have given the front seat passenger of the Mondeo a better chance as there is no steering wheel to collide with.

It should be remembered that cars are designed to crumple to absorb the energy of the accident so you should expect major damage at these sort of speeds. The Mondeo is a later design of car so may be better protected.

Anyway, if you really are the fourth occupant then you have had a lucky escape and it's good to hear that.

3 Lanes!

Massive massive accident. The front passenger space does appear to be compromised, with the windscreen pillar folded back, perhaps by the bonnet. At least the top and bottom welds held. I remember a car safety survey like NCAP on offset collisions when these models were current. They ranked the BMW 5 series 1rst, merc124 2nd, and volvo 700 series 3rd. The strongest body shell turned out to be the volvo but it was determined with accelerometers its body strength actually increased the forces experienced by its restrained passengers to levels higher than desirable. It would appear that certain accidents are unsurvivable due the enormous energy involved no matter how strong the car is. When buying an older car such as a w124 or Volvo unfortunately corrosion may also play a part in compromising the initial high structural integrity of the car and is one more reason a close inspection of the body is necessary before purchase. I notice also that the road appears to be one of those 3 LANE affairs with the centre lane "suicide alley" Perhaps this more than anything resulted in the deaths of these unfortunate people.

wouldn't that be a 50mph collision, assuming both vehicles have equal mass?

No, the speeds add to each other to give a combined impact speed, equal mass would only compund this as both objects would have equal resistance to being moved from their original path.

Anywho, I just have bought a 96 124 estate myself, hopefully I will never be putting it to that test though.
