Maybe other W124 owners can confirm:

I noticed after purchase of my car that there is no insulation underneath the bonnet, just bare spray metal.

However, I can see evidence of adhesive on the bonnet surface.

Should there be insulation on there ? If so, ought I get it re-installed or will it damage the paintwork ?

Any advice appreciated.

You can buy a new foam liner from the dealer for about £20.

I bought one about a month ago, fix in place with normal contact adhesive.

I have just had a look and no i have not got one nor any sign of one ever being there, there is only a quarter piece bulhead end which seems to cover the fuses and battery when the bonnet is closed.

My 1992 260E has complete underbonnet insulatiom as well. Will post piccy of it tomorrow if anyone wants?

ditto - 100% present and correct.

Apparently there are two varieties of insulation, The full version and a quarter version.

The full version is now only available for the Diesel models....the only difference being that the Diesel models had a reflective silver panel on the left hand side of the bonnet, directly over the exhaust headers. Well worth the £20 if you ask me.

Thanks for the pics.

I'll invest in one as it can't be doing the bonnet paintwork much good
