I went to look at one of these today.

Now I know everyone says to keep clear of the 4Matic, however I live in the Alps, and intend to have this as my winter car so the 4matic is a must for me (my other two cars being rwd, even with decent winter tyres it can get tricky).
Overall the car is in very nice condition, but there are a couple of things that make me hesitant. It is owned by a very old chap who stopped driving about 5 years ago. I expect to find some issues relating to that, although on the test drive I didn't see anything in particular. The maintenance book shows a stamp every 10,000km (or even more frequent) at various MB garages or specialists, but stopped in 2011 at 245,000. It's now on 250,000. His son told me he drove it every now and then but I have no way of verifying this. The car's MOTs were kept up to date, and Swiss MOT's are a fair bit stricter than what I experienced in the UK so that gives me some confidence.

The two concerns I have are:
1. There was a whining noise coming from the rear when accelerating, that went up in pitch with the car's speed (not engine speed, changing gears didn't alter it). It got progressively louder as the car warmed up. It was apparent as soon as I went on throttle, even when just feathering it. Any ideas what this could be? I'm concerned that it is linked to the 4matic, the transfer going back to the front had very shiny bolts so I suspect it was worked on recently. The owner wasn't available as he can't walk, his wife and his daughter were with me but didn't know. They said to speak to his son (who's selling the car), however he's currently out of the country.

2. The gearbox doesn't seem to kick down, is this normal on these? I can make it go down to 3rd or 2nd by selecting it but when mashing the pedal in drive it stayed in 4th.

And I thought it felt a bit sluggish for such an engine, although my view might be skewed as my current brabus has a fair few ponies more. Low down it didn't feel like a 3.6, higher up it did start to pull just not as strongly as I'd expect. The chap with me thought it pulled well once it started revving, but from what I hear about the M103 it's not the kind of engine that needs revs to get going.

Other than that it was a very nice car, I couldn't see any signs of rust on it, even underneath it was extremely clean. It looks like a car that was pampered all its life until it was parked up. He's owed it since the late 90s and is the 2nd owner.

A very rare car. If the price is right then it might be worth a punt.

May I ask why "everyone says to keep clear of the 4Matic"?

There's a lot of "custom engineering" in these cars as standard even more so with a bored + stroked Brabus 3.6 engine. Parts may be very difficult to source if repairs are needed. I suspect the car has been well looked after but inevitably time may have taken its toll. Had it had an extensive transmission /engine rebuild somewhere in its recent history I would have perhaps felt more confident. Transfer gearbox problems spell big problems--- did you check the 4matic shut off valve [ if fitted] position under the bonnet? Did the warning traction control light come on at any time? The rear diff is a lockable one, and if the noise is coming from the rear and varies with road speed that would my primary suspect.

Hmmm.....

Apart from a red plaque in the engine bay is there any evidence of any Brabus involvement with that car or engine?

I’m not sure everyone does, but troubleshooting and repairing an older car with 4matic may be trickier: they’re complex compared to 2WD/RWD, and they’re less common too, meaning that fewer mechanics have experience of working on them, and parts are less readily available (especially use or reconditioned).

I don't think it is the gearbox, the noise was coming from the rear so I suspect diff/transfer case. But I have no idea howmuch work this could be, or if replacement parts are even available.

I wasn't aware of any 4matic shut off valve, so I didn't even look for that. The traction warning didn't come on at any time.

The car papers shows it has a Brabus 3.6. All modifications in CH must be homologated and recorded on the "carte grise" which is like a V5 in the UK.

Tread carefully as I see no sign of the car being Brabus
If it's a genuine car then is worth the money, very good price actually
See for more paperwork that involve the car with Brabus

Note there may be different rear axle ratios. HERE'S one REBUILD/EXCHANGE EXAMPLE Price: EUR 1.490,87
(inkl. Tax + shipping costs)
A1243506914 Differential Rear Transmission - 3,64 Abs Asd W124 300d Regenerated Mercedes Benz
The differential is locked hydraulically and shares its tech with non 4wd cars that are equipped with ASD ASR differentials
Cheers for the link, I take it that's just an example and not the same for the 4matic?

Thanks for the heads up, I'll make sure of that before taking the plunge.

I'm still hesitant about this car, on one hand it was well cared for but it has been standing for a long time, even though it had a new MOT back in May and they kept it taxed.

Further research on the chassis number WDB1242301B649787 given in the advert would indicate that a your rear differential part no would be A1243505814 with a ratio of 1: 3.07
giving you this
Differential Rear Transmission - 3,07 Asd W124 300e 300d - Regenerated Mercedes-Benz A1243505814 1243504374 1243505814 1243509503 A1243504374 A1243505814 A1243509503
you will notice the same price rebuild on exchange as the other. If undertaking this it would be wise to check the xisting diff aprt no to check.
The W124 4matic stretched the existing technology of the day to its limits and it shows in its reliability in action. Mercedes mechanics hated it even when the model was current. If you are looking for a reliable everyday 4wd MERC for the Alps I would look at the next generation of 4MATIC found in the ML W163/164 models
