W124 E300D auto box light

I think there should be a little light which illuminates the selected position of the gear knob ... P R N D 3 2 1 . My light isn't working. How easy / difficult is this to replace?

not difficult but fiddly

lift off the surround and remove the wooden trim, this is held in place by one screw below the carpet in the centre console tray. You then need to lift the wood trim from the rear - all the switches except the mirror adjuster will come away with the trim but it may need a bit of persuasion as the contacts for the mirror switch hold it place - be careful not to crack the wood.

now you can get at the gear selector surround - on the sides at the front end there are two big plastic locator lugs, if you disengage those the whole top half of the surround will come away - be careful not to lose the small bit of white plastic which holds in the W/S switch.

Take off the plastic covers for the gear numbers and you'll find the bulb nestling in there

tee hee - I forgot to add "buy the bulb before you take it apart".

It will also goive you a chance to clean out all the gunk from the rubber gaiter inside the shift mechanism - you'd be surprised how filthy they get
