Hi Guys
I have a 95 e300d with 606 engine and wondered if anyone had experienced the following: Oil and water appear to be mixing, oil pressure has dropped. Drives, but seems to lose power when warmed up and above about 3000rpm, also blows out smoke/steam when this happens. Engine noise sounds a little different but not much (a bit like when exhaust starts to blow). Engine was re cond. about 60k miles ago and has never been allowed to overheat, run low oil etc. Fitted new radiator recently, do I have an air lock? Are there any things I should check before replacing head gasket. (I am currently short of cash and could do with avoiding big expense:() your help as ever would be hugely appreciated.

That`ll be the HG i`m afraid

Do you think that is a do-able job for a reasonably competant DIYer, I just got a quote for a thousand quid!

I`ve had the same oil mixing with water after replacing a radiator, but the oil cooler was faulty, but in your case is deffo the HG.Get some other quotes but it will not be much cheaper

Depends on how handy you are with the spanners. For an experienced DIY-er it's probably not all that difficult (more time consuming), but you might need a few specialist tools that you don't already own?

If you've never attempted something like this before and/or don't have a lot of tools and some experienced friends to help/advise, it's probably not the best job to tackle yourself.

The bulk of the £1000 quote will be labour - but obviously there will be the costs of new gaskets, bolts, machining if needed etc.

Will

As you say that you are short of cash have you thought about trying a product such as K-Seal ?

I know that some people frown on such things, but I have read,on here, many people have used it and swear by it.Just a thought.

You would need to flush out all the sludge first though.

I have recently done a HG on a 300D (£750). This engine had also had some form of sealer introduced to the engine to "cure" the leak. NOT a pretty sight, avoid at all costs.

I seem to recall that the heat exchanger located in the sump can fail, could it be this?

Thanks for your support Guys, car has done 285k, engine recond by Total Engine Co in Crewe 5 yrs ago (60k miles). Update have now discovered a hole in top cooling hose and also power steering reservoir overflowing! things are going from bad to worse and I really have a soft spot for this car!
