W124 E36 Estate - does this car look genuine to you?

Looking at what the VIN has said, it does look suspicious. The VIN states its a 3.2 with a 722.5 5-speed auto box. Genuine E36 cars only came with the 722.4 4 speed box and a 2.82 rear diff. Ive seen pictures of a genuine E36 ECU and it has the AMG logo on it and its written "HM AMG 3.6L 6 Zyl" with a "HWA 124 545 12 32" part number as an example. Interior wise, the gearknob had E36 stamped on it. There would be the AMG sticker on the slam panel in the engine bay too.

Those are the things I'd be looking for to see if it was a genuine car, especially that rear diff and gearbox. Most people who do these engine swaps only put in the engine and leave the standard 3.06 rear diff in. Unless if they have a genuine 36 on the side as a complete donor car.

The gearknob does not have the E36 stamped on it, and the AMG sticker on the slam panel in the engine bay is missing too - this is clearly seen from the pics in my first 2 posts.

Also, the full car spec reveals that it has a 722.5 5-speed auto box ... :(

Yep, its not a genuine E36.

There is no "957" option code on that data list, which all E36 cars had - AMG Technical Package.

Ok, finally the mistery is solved. Now, since this is still a relatively nice car, how much would this be worth? Does £4k sound reasonable?

If you wanted an E36, I'd say buy an E36. Or, failing that buy non tat nice E320. But, hey I'm not in the market, you are.

What I want to eventually end-up with is a twin-charged or just supercharged E36 engined W124 sleeper estate, with all the creature comforts of a well equipped car.
I do not have to buy this particular estate but it seems to be well equipped so the creature comforts would be almost there.

It's as clear as mud... the VIN decoder shows a 5-speed gearbox but it looks like it's fitted with a 4-speed. The crosspipe says 3.6 but there are no AMG stickers on the slam panel. The VIN says standard seats but the car has a Sports interior

It's a hard car to get excited about - it's either a nice E320 covered in tat or an E36 which can't easily prove that it's an E36. Either way it's problematic when you come to value or sell it

Yes Nick, but it only took 43 posts and now we can have another 43 posts to discuss the price, one must not sum up so quickly....

That's true - then 43 posts arguing about leasing!
