Hi,

I have recently seen a 1995 E500 Limited for sale in Brunei which was allegedly modified by AMG to E60 specification.

The car has been stored for about 15 years but my question is whether anyone knows how many were later modified by AMG to E60 spec compared to the 10-12 that left the factory as E60 on the data card?

I contact AMG in Germany but they do not hold the information any longer.

It has the correct engine block (and stamped AMG) aside from that it looks just like my E500 Limited.

Done a grand total of 34000 KM!

I am contemplating selling my E500 Limited and getting this (at the right price).

Trying to ascertain its rarity, worth considering that it was later modified by AMG in 1995. I read somewhere that around 100 cars were later modified but no clear answers.

I would treat any information coming not from AMG themselves with a grain of salt. Strip the block and measure the bore and length of stroke. If it adds up to 6L, it could be the one to have.

Sounds a little extreme to do that with a car belonging to someone else. I do acknowledge it's one possibility though.

AMG information is more so that they say they do not keep much data before year 1999.

Any other ideas?
 
Would measuring the stroke alone help... or is it similar to others...?

Do you have pictures you could share?

Brunei stuff is one off custom made for Royalty, hard to get info on officially I'd imagine.
 
If there's no paperwork available with the car and AMG are not cooperating, physically checking the displacement might be the only way to know for sure.

A competent mechanic/garage should be able to verify the engine's displacement in a day's work.

Maybe your seller can be convinced to do that as a part of full service, since the car was in storage that long.
 
Would MB's homologation department be able to help? Might be worth a shot at homologation.mercedes-benz.co.uk/mbpc. There's a charge though.

There was also a specialised E60 AMG model built in very limited numbers from 1994 to 1995 which had the 6.0L V8 engine. The vehicle had a 381bhp and can reach 0-60 mph within 5.3 seconds. The vehicle was equipped with the "Limited" sports interior, 17" EVO-II alloys together with uprated AMG sports suspension and AMG twin outlet exhaust system. Otherwise, the brakes and body remained the same. The E500 and E60 AMG both came with the flared front and rear wheel arches with larger front bumpers and front foglights. The "957" AMG Technology Package in the VIN number of the vehicle almost guarantees the vehicle is an original E60 as left the factory. Very many E500's have been converted to E60's by changing the engine out for the 6.0L V8. Another giveaway is the AMG engine stamps saying "M 119 E 60" together with "AMG" written along the airboxes instead of "Mercedes-Benz". [ easy to copy}

afaik the E60 M119.974 was a bored out 5.6 engine which in turn was stroked 5.0L :dk:

4.2L (4,196cc) = 92.0 x 78.9 (stock 400E)
5.0L (4,973cc) = 96.5 x 85.0 (stock 500E)

5.6L (5,547cc) = 96.5 x 94.8 (5.0 block with M117 crank)
5.8L (5,851cc) = 96.5 x 100 (5.0 block with Brabus crank)
6.0L (5,956cc) = 100 x 94.8 (AMG, RENNtech, etc - Standard stroker motor)
6.1L (6,076cc) = 101 x 94.8 (Lorinser)
6.2L (6,197cc) = 102 x 94.8 (Lorinser, RENNtech)
6.2L (6,207cc) = 100 x 98.8 (Carlsson C62, 420hp/313kw, 457tq/620Nm)
6.3L (6,283cc) = 100 x 100 (Rumor is AMG built two rated at 405hp/298kw, 454tq/616Nm, no details available on bore/stroke - ALSO, these may have been badged E63 but only been 6.2L displacement.)

AMG had a 89 mm crankshaft for the 5,2 and 5,4 M117 engine. Maybe this was also mounted in M119 engines.
