Opinions wanted on best course of action for my 124 E280 est. I can now see daylight through the inner wing under the ABS pump which will lead to certain MOT failure in a couple of months time. My problem is that I can scrap it for 2 grand, but the rest of the car is too good for that. Last year I replaced the Headgasket and ECU, and the gearbox overhaul and new T/C was done then too.

I guess I'm looking at getting the wings welded at several hundreds, or breaking the car and selling the good bits on.

It just doesn't seem right to scrap the whole car for 2 grand where it will no longer provide such great service.

If you`re thinking to get a new car,but if you need a workhorse keep it.After spending all that money,is well worth to repair.

Try to repair it yourself, theres plenty of guides on youtube for rust repair with fibreglass, or do a welded repair, if you screw it up then get someone else to do it, coz if you dont screw it up youre set.

Cant see it costing several hundred pounds, when i used to do this years ago it was a pound an inch of weld roughly, ie a 4 inch by 4 inch patch would cost you £16, was a few years ago, as for fibreglass dont go there:eek:.

Before making your mind up have a good dig around with a screwdriver to see how far the rust goes, then get a local garage to have a look.

An MOT Tester who sees fibre glass will poke the metal until they can fail it....

Do the job right and have a workhorse you can sell when *you* want to.

Keep it on the road. You'll miss it otherwise!

Good news - rusty inner wings are not structural therefore not an MOT fail. Still needs repairing but we live to fight another year !

Top news another 124 keep on truckin' Managed to get my hands on a 124 300D saloon at the weekend. Bodywork is shabby, drivers seat ditto. Engine, gearbox, running gear appear bob-on. Bought in Ayr, Scotland turned the key drove 200 miles home - never missed a beat. I'm a serial offender where 124's are concerned. This one has 194,000 miles on it and looks promising. Oh - Anyone got a drivers seat - 124 - black and white checked cloth up for grabs. I'll put an ad in "most wanted" later.

Inner wing rust is surprisingly common on later W124s. Although it won't be easy gaining access I don't think a welded patch should be expensive

How about black leather seats and door cards?:thumb:

yes it must be welded (dont use fibreglass on a structual piece)

i opt for repair - get some quotes - atleast then you know what you are looking at.
