W124 Estate - Which tyres are best

Hello all, I wanted to establish a thread for owners of the W124 Estate to discuss tyres.

I have a standard 320TE and would like to know what tyres you recommend.

I genuinely have no idea what's good out there for this car and if there are any real differences between W124 models. My other car, a Clio V6, is very specialist and tyres make a huge difference.

So what would you run on a 320TE?

I run Continental Premium Contact IIs on my car in the summer, and Continental Wintercontacts in winter. The former were supplied with the car by Nick Froome of W124, who I believe has experimented with tyres for W124s over the years to get the best ride.

Comparing them with the Michelin tyres I had on my coupe, the Continentals have a softer, quieter ride. Lovely combination.

For me its Kumho ECSTA HM's. They too are a soft quiet ride, very grippie in the snow too.
Have never tried Continentals so I cannot compare.

set of 4 hanka tyres, never heard of them but they are quiet, seem to hold the road and are wearing very well.

Continental or Michelin would be my choice.

Nick Froome (the independent Mercedes Estate specialists) recommends Continental Premium Contact II tyres.

I run these on my W124 estate and I do like them.

Currently I do have a set of Pneumount Win-Tec 150 winter tyres on there though, for the winter season, and they are performing well.

THe datacard with the car would have said which tyres the car was supplied with - I would guess Michelin. In general I have found my W124s to be best with Michelin or as a 2nd best Continental.
The problem with Michelin is that they now do not make tyres in the right LSI for the OEM E320 wheels whereas Continental do so I guess Continental is now the best.

Conti premium contact ll on mine. Excellent, they seem taylor made for the car IMO.

I'd rate them in this order:

1 - Continental Premium Contact 2
2 - Continental Eco Contact 3
3 - Michelin Primacy
- then a big gap to
4 - Avon ZV3
5 - Goodyear NCT (noisy)
6 - Pirelli P6000

My ranking is based on wet grip, quietness & comfort

The Continental WinterContact TS830P is said to be good for winter use. I've had good reports from users

I have 2 w124 estates - a 1995 E300D auto and a 1989 250TD manual.

I twice fitted Michelin Pilot Primacy on the E300D for about £270, and got over 20,000 miles wear each time. The tyres were quiet and very hard wearing - I found them excellent. Unfortunately, they no longer make these for a 195 65 15 inch wheel. I read reports that the alternative Michelin Economytyre was both noisey and poor in the wet, and so I went over to Continental Premium Contact IIs at £260. These make the car handle beautifully, and are comfortable and quiet and feel very grippy in the wet, but they are down to 3-4mm tread after just 10,000 miles. Their wear is disappointing, but I will probably replace with the same because I do not think that there is anything better.

My 250TD has run on Goodyear NTC 5 tyres and I am down to 4-5mm tread after 10,000 miles. These tyres have been very good but as Nick says, are noisier than the Michelins and Continentals- but wear less well than the Michelins. The walls are now cracking on the rear tyres (but then this car was not used so much last summer and sat in my garage for weeks at a time).

I put this manual car onto Continental Winter Contact tyres (£286) for the winter, and these are fantastic in cold, wet, icy and snowy conditions - I commute a 30 minute journey from 1000ft to sea level and back here in North Wales each day. These tyres are exceptionally grippy and allow me to get up the steep roads in snow, which was not possible on my Goodyear summer tyres. They feel soft - the car seems to move around more on them around corners, and they are not surprisingly noisier due to the deeper tread. However, I strongly recommend them - they make a heavy rear wheel car possible to drive in these conditions. I will put them on the E300 auto next year too, for sure.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm currently running Goodyear Eagle NCT5s and they're fine but without comparing, I can't, well, compare!

The Continental Premium Contact IIs seems to be the ones to go for, but I can only find them at £89.50 a corner which is a helluva lot..

I used Goodyear NCT5s for a few years before changing to the Continentals, which are noticeably better in every respect. Premium Contact IIs from Kwikfit, booked and paid for in advance online, are currently £59 a corner.
