w124 estate

Looks like the rear suspension is collapsed, they usually sit a lot higher than that, even with a load. Also doesn't mention MOT or Tax.

But then again if it goes for a couple of hundred? + the transport costs??.....Naa.

Ciao.

im looking for an estate as a 2nd car and came across this, does anyone have any idea as to whether this might be a bargain?

Bear in mind that I sold a 92 K 300TE with 140k genuine and FSH for just over the £2k mark in a good metallic, no faults, leather and air con (but a bit of wheelarch rust), it is all about the cost of putting it right against the value of the car you end up with. Do you believe the mileage (looks like it has had a hard life), and the service history claims? make sure it really is a bargain. If that rear suspension has gone it going to cost :( . Have a look at the car to get a feel for it and watch the hydraulic tank for the rear sus. rf of the engine bay get someone to crouch in the boot and see what happens to the levels (with the engine running).
P.S. 3.0 24v and an Economy gauge on the dash :D

it's got to be worth a couple of hundred, three at the most considering the condition it's in.

decent quality estates are getting harder to find but there will always be plenty like this one. I'd sooner buy one that's running properly and is maybe a couple of years older than spend more than £200 on what could be a potential money pit.

thanks guys looks like i'll pass on this one!

Just noticed a couple more things;

1) The wood paneling on the rear door looks damaged.
2) Aftermarket speakers fitted in rear doors (leaving big holes)
3) Wood paneling on front door doesn't look good either, plus looks like it's held on with screw at rear top!
4) Steering wheel doesn't look original, star looks wrong, should be shiny.
5) Aerial fitted to front centre of roof. (possible leaks) Though a common fitment to TE's
6) Left hand side headlight different, off newer model type bonnet.
7) As said, headlight wipers missing.
8) Also the right rear door just doesn't look right, or the fuel filler cap.
9) The boot shouldn't be open like that, as soon as you have it in that possition it should self-close.

Hope that helps, cheers.

1, the wood panelling looks fine to me

2, that's where speakers are designed to fit in W124 rear doors

3, that's a reflection

4, nah, the star isn't always shiny especially on models with an airbag

5, the aerial is a phone fiting - that's where they go and they don't leak if fitted properly

6, 7, agreed

8, the rear door is due to the picture suffering from jpeg artefacts - common when you compress images too far, the fuel flap may be a little rusty but that's not serious

9, the boot is not closed and not all models had self closing back in 1989/90 it was an expensive option. Even if it is fitted you can still rest it against the self closer without it pulling the door shut.

I still say that it's worth a punt if the price stays below £300 and you are local with a reasonable aptiotude for mechanics

Sorry Andy, but.......(see attached photo's)....

1) Doesn't look ok to me
2) Could be, but I've never seen them there before, and in my handbook, they show them in the rear bay, if fitted.
3) Debatable, I agree the flash has been reflected, but not the rest.
4) Agreed.
5) All I can say is that mine was a Radio Aerial, and it used to leak right onto the Interior Light (only v. slightly).
8&9) Agreed.

Cheers.
:)

The most important question though is;did he buy the Merc to match the caravan or buy the caravan to match the Merc......!LOL ;)

I'll still disagree on the reflections - look at them closely enough you can see the check patterning and that can't be a screw because there is nothing really to fix at that point, besides, it's a bright point that matches the rest of the flash reflections.

I've never seen speakers mentioned in the rear load bay - again, there's nowhere to mount them, come to think about it no owners manual I've got even mentions the stereo aside from acknowledging it's existance in the dashboard plan . My old W124 estate had a genuine merc 4 speaker system (dealer fitted) and they were in the back doors - exactly the same speakers as in the dash.

If I lived local to that car - I'd certainly consider it if the price were right

How come my 300CE-24 has no economy gauge, but this 300-24 engined estate does? Why/when did they drop the gauge ?

I think an economy gauge in a Mercedes 300TE is just an example of that rare (but not nonexistent) commodity, a German sense of humour

A British journalist was testing a new Porsche 911 with four wheel drive one day (so the story goes...). He wanted to know the recommended launch procedure for the quickest getaway so he called the factory. He was put through to the engineering department where he asked his question. After a short pause, back came the answer "Engage first gear, rev ze engine to ze redline, release ze clutch"

The journalist said, appalled "Release the clutch... at redline? Surely you must be joking?"

Back came the answer "Ve are German Engineers. Ve never joke"
