W124 1993 M111 E220 Estate. Grrrrrrrr, lost power to drivers window so pulled up centre console panel to check the switch first, pulled it apart, it looked good all other switches/windows good. Cleaned crud and reclaimed coins ( made 56p:)) from recesses. Dr'window still no go.

Next day non starter. other windows still fast, starter very slow but hold key over and it speeds up a bit and starts...just, horn also makes battery appear low ( battery previously ok so not the suspect).

Decide to strip out window regulator and clean it and wiring contacts, (tip..on the regulator spray wd40 onto spring coil to clean by pushing the unit back and fro through its working action, this cleans any rust on the inside of the spring coil making its action easier and probably cure any juddering probs you might have. Please remember when taking the door card off to pull it up not to try and pop it off as with many other cars:doh:

:bannana: the drivers window now works perfectly
the starting problem still exists:confused:

the battery was not disconnected for the first event of cleaning the switches after which the problem occurred, all fuses appear good.:wallbash:

You may have a problem with wire insulation where the feed wires for the window motor/locks etc pass thro the door hinge. If you are getting any sort of intermittent break/short to earth there you may be flattening the battery and having winder problems. Time to check for any parasitic current draw from the battery with everything supposedly switched off.

There's something in the back of my mind also about faulty estate rear closing mechanisms flattening batteries but can bring it to mind at this time of night sorry.

Looks as though it is NOT the switch but you can RECHECK the switch by using one of the others that you know is good

Good luck

Thx for replies.

Battery def not the problem. Problem is now intermittent. Starting well, then slow 50/50 ish. I will check the cables at door entry asap.

The car was good previous to messing with switches, just done the spheres, service and viscous.......should have stopped interfering with her. ;)

I did ferret about under the ashtray in the console and now wonder if i dislodged something. Its just so odd that the windows have full power and the starter current is affected oddly,....now considering the auto shift switch.

will post fault rectification if successful but welcome any other comments especially as i cant afford a professional solution, cheers.

Just when she beginning to behave.

Sorted.... my apologies, I didn't offer the full facts.

I had also THOROUGHLY cleaned ALL parts of the throttle mechanism where it is attached to the intake manifold. I can recommend this for all cars experiencing that dead pedal effect which makes pulling away smoothly, somewhat awkward.

Plenty of WD40 to flush the main spring free of crud and using a toothbrush on everything else in situ. Then removing the air flow piping to clean the butterfly, and vent hose (mine was hardened and had a poor connection, its about a fiver from MB, but a strip of inner tube is sorting it ok at the mo) I suggest pulling the air temp sensor from the airflow piping and if like mine remove the dollop of crud that is probably attached to the sensitive part, it must work better now!

So all this was done on the same day the window and starter played up hence the above post.

Back to the drivers window, it then stopped down a few days back necessitating another strip down. This time I took the motor apart from the gearing ( torx screws) just mark it for reassembly, stripped motor cleaned brushes etc and lubed end bearing ( note reassembly requires the correct alignment of the internal end cups in the motor/gear housings just use a thin stick, you can use a screwdriver but you'll find out why not when you try:))
motor and gearhousing should engage smoothly together if end cups are correct but wont otherwise. Cleaned the wiring contacts, and made doubly sure glass was aligned to run accurately and without yawing within its frame and overworking the motor.

I checked the wiring back to the footwell but decided against stripping it out because it didnt look that easy and the window operated quickly and quietly, in fact so much so I might do them all........not.

Soooooooo.......did altering the load on the windie motor cure the intermittent start....................no.

Did going back to the inlet manifold and reattaching a very thin plastic hose that ran from somewhere near the injectors/ head to its connector near the butterfly housing which I had knocked off when cleaning the throttle linkages..........um....yeah:o

until told otherwise i am presuming that this helps hold the fuel inline and the ECU recognising this loss cuts out the current to starter for the fuel pump and then reinstates current when the fuel arrives which accounts for the slow then quick engine turnover.

I have bothered to post this result because any solution to poor starting that can be resolved this quickly and easily ought to be known.

My engine is the M111.960 (E220)
