Now have a S212 350 PETROL! . Did have 1992 W124 300E Ford Escort 1300E(now sold!)
Hoping for some advise!! I have a '92 W124 with 3.0 M103 engine and autobox. There is a leak from the back of the box which does not leak when the car is used on short journeys. However I have had a problem when the car is fully loaded with people and luggage and driven for a long period of time, maybe up to three and a half hours of motorway cruising. Oil leaks from around the propshaft and covers the "cat" etc making a mess of the underside, creating a horrendous smell and covering the back of the car in a fine mist.
Could it be that after 105K miles just the propshaft seal or could it be something nasty?
Anyone any idea how expensive changing the seal would be?

All help appreciated.

Gone for the front propshaft oil seal. £5.71 from local Main dealer!!.

I have checked the level with the dipstick with the oil warm, engine running and park selected and it seems ok. Is this a red herring and I am not checking correctly?

All fixed. The seal had gone hard and after replacement and a good clean down of the oil mist no more oil loss and smell of burning ATF :bannana:

that's an interesting fault, which does not seem to occur much.

what was involved in replacing the seal ?

how much time involved.

do the work yourself.

any special tools ?

much dismantling ?

Be very interested to get your feedback - thanks.

Sorry for the dealy in replying but have been V busy. My local "classic Car" garage in Bedford did the repair. The guy there is a perfectionist and I trust him totally. All that was need was a drop down of a Xmember and loosen the propshaft centre joint fixing, remove shaft and replace seal. With the cost of the seal and TQF the toal was less than £100. After over 2,000miles nio leaks and better still no smell/smoke after and long/fast journey.
