on one of my cars neither the wipers nor the jest work

now ive been told that that means they are both broken and both need replacing at quite some expense

but

on my other w124 the wiper stopped working (dead motor) but the jet still worked

so im thinking there would have to be 2 broken wiper motors and 2 broken jets for all 4 bits to not be working

so is it more likely to be a fuse or relay

if some one can help that would be great

Hi,
Not familiar specifically with the 124 but I believe it is wired in the same way as the 202, I agree with you that it is likely to be a relay of fuse stopping the wipers from working.
If it was mine and all the fuses are good and making a good connection, I would look in the fuse box of the car with the headlight washers that work, and remove the relays in turn till the headlight washers no longer work and substitute that relay in your other car.
There is only the 2 wiper motors and a washer pump in this circuit so if you find a blown fuse, and it blows immediately when trying to operate the wash/wipe system disconnect each wiper motor and the washer pump in turn to see which item is faulty, if washer pump is faulty cheap to replace I think you could get pattern one from Halfords, if one of the motors if they are similar to the 202 ones they can be taken apart freed off and greased, which would most likely fix it but do be carefully when taking them apart as the gearbox linkage in the wiper assembly has to reassembled exactly right otherwise the motor will not park correctly.
Post back if this is unsuccessful.

There is one "Master" wiper motor with a (IIRC) four-pin plug and one with a three-pin. The Master switches the feed for the other motor & the washer pump. So if the Master fails the whole system dies

It's a poor system and would be better replaced with a high-pressure wash like the contemporary BMWs

they have now been removed

getting new panels without holes in was a mission

ended up having to buy 5 to get a matching set (not on yet as need painting)

anyway the new grill is on, the AMG bumpers off the coupe are on, fog lights re-positioned and now working & connected to driving lights rather than fog lights (yet to see if this is wise), brake callipers painted black (no more rusty look), new clear side wing indicators & lots more done too
