So, I had to take the o/s headlight off the W124 this evening to replace the check valve on the headlamp wash wipe. I had no choice but to do it in the dark and rain as I have a long trip on Saturday, and having no screen wash due to a leaky valve isn't an option.

That my excuse of the following incompetance.

How the hell are you supposed to refit the bolt that holds the headlight in palce thats nearest the radiator?

There is literally no room to even get the bolt into position, let alone seat it in the thread. Short of removing the fans and transmission fluid cooler (Is that what the pipework in front of the fans is?).

Anyway, I had leave that bolt out and will try and rectify it on Sunday.

Are there handy tips for re-fitting this bolt, or is merely a case of swearing a lot, losing into the engine bay a few times and plenty of persistence?

You need a short 8 mm ring spanner, a magnetic tool and lots of patience. Once it's in, use an 1/8" drive socket to wind it in

The easiest way to get it in in the first place is to hold it in place and then locate the headlight onto it

Not an easy job

Thanks Nick, I was hoping I'd missed something that would make the job easier, but it looks like it's back to frustration mode on Sunday morning.
