After umming and ahhing (and getting screwed on a potential replacement), I've finally seen sense & I'm keeping my S124. However, as is always the way with these things I described the car to someone as being totally reliable, then jumped in it & tried to turn on the blower for some fresh air to be greeted with nothing. All 4 speed positions resulted in the same blast of inaction, as the fan spun up to 0 RPM and stuck there resolutely.
I thought maybe it was a fuse, but as I was on my way out I didn't bother checking. Later in my journey I tried the switch again out of bloody mindedness and behold, it worked - kinda. The fan now span, but not as fast as I thought it should. Still, this made me think my initial diagnosis was wrong; a further test after 2 hours on the road confirmed this, as the fan finally seemed to be almost completely restored to normal service.
Can anyone suggest what might have been the cause of this, how I might prevent a recurrence, etc.?
