Hi Guys,

Joined the forum a few weeks back.

Years ago when the W124 was fairly new I always drooled over the sight of these timeless pillarless coupe's and loved the TE's and E500's. Had a few rides in some some saloons. Was always impressed.

Then my sister and brother in law started looking for a Convertible. Had to be Mercedes. After looking at various CLK's (W208 and W209) they finally settled on a beautiful example of an E220 W124 because of the timeless look and generally fantastic build quality.

Jealousy soon set in from my side and I decided to get myself a W124 :) Wife approval was not there because we kind of already have quite a few cars (W208 CLK 320, E60 M5 V10, E92 M3 and E39 M5).
Finally convinced her but could not spend too much money. Really wanted the ex museum E36 AMG which Avanteguard are selling but that would mean selling the E60... not happening!

Finally found a dark grey E320 1994 locally to me which met the budget. Massive documented S/H and great interior with everything working bar the A/C.

Most important thing was that it drove really well and was mechanically very good which a few weeks of driving have now shown to be the case.
There are some rust spots on the arches which will require attention and a few door dents.

Even though I own some nice BMW's I actually really enjoy this car and have found myself driving it on the weekends and spending some serious time in it.
The engine is nothing like as powerful as the big V8's I'm used to it's still effortless and sounds incredibly smooth. It's ample powerful enough to enjoy and has a real organic feel about it.

Overall real impressed with the build quality and the overall feel of the car. The best way I can describe it is that it has SOUL! I just love driving it.

The ride quality is simply stunning and it's a car you will really chill out in.

Surprised to see how many looks it gets on the road too. Great to see people are still appreciating these old cars. Friend of mine said 'you only bought that because it's cool'. Well, that's a compliment.

So... now begins the restoration and to bring it to a very high standard.

Not sure which direction I want to go. Keep it 100% standard or maybe some subtle upgrades like 17" genuine AMG alloys and maybe some subtle lowering (not beyond AMG levels of course!).

Needs a decent Becker stereo too.

Just be sure you don't loose the ride quality putting those big wheels on.........

Nice cars though the 124's - aren't they. :):)

Very nice :)

p.s. I have a spare Diavia a/c condenser in case you end up needing it.

They are indeed very nice.

The ride is a little too smooth majic carpet ride. Tend to find that really soft setups like this can also be a little crashy too over our UK roads.
Another local W124 enthusiast has a 1995 300D TE with the 17 inch AMG's so may just borrow those first to see if I like it.

If the ride does stiffen up it will probably cause a few rattles and squeaks from the interior so the plan is to remove literally everything and add a nice layer of dynamat and refit with new clips and a layer of the long life silicone on all contact surfaces. Should keep it really nice and quiet in there.

ah! Very kind of you.

Hopefully it just needs a re-gas.

im just smiling ...
the car looks fabulous , you are already enjoying it!

Yes, 124 coupes and especially convertibles are timeless and cool.. Nice one!:bannana:

Thanks!

Definately enjoying it alot. The smell inside is also great and the quality of that leather puts so many modern cars to absolute shame. Especially the latest E Class which I drove for a weekend. Call that leather!

Im a cloth man myself, er not a man of the cloth:D

As a recent convert to the W124, they do seem to be the ideal car.

You seem to have the car I SHOULD have bought.

I am currently drooling over this one for sale:

Resisting and instead make my one super nice as I don't need the power. For that the V8 or V10 M5's are fine.

Bilstien do a nice kit for the 124. Other than that a standard MB Sportline set up is just about perfect, but will cost you more. Continental do a great tyre for the 124, but don't go for the very low profile types if you want decent ride quality.

You will be surprised how little squeak comes from these and any that do should really be fixed for good with Krytox.

And lastly don't fall into the trap of going too low, the 124 NEEDS suspension travel to be at its very best, both for comfort AND performance.

Great advice.

I hate too low personally. Always have. As you rightly say, suspension travel is very very important.
I used to own an E30 M3 many years ago and fitted H&R coilover to it. The rear wheels left the ground on the M25!

B12 Kits from Bilstein are probably the best option but I tend to find the B8 and B6 dampers from Bilstein are way too harsh on the rebound, not enough bump and the bump stops are harsh. I can try some out and if I don't like them can get Bilstein UK to re valve them for me. Just means the pain in the a8se of removing and re fitting.

The lowering of the above E36 AMG image is just perfect for me.

Yes, there are plenty of people on here that can guide you through the set up for the 124 based on experience. I am sure they will be along in a moment.

The E36 does look just right doesn't it, to go lower and firmer means you are not going to get the best out of your car for street use IMHO........

If I didn't need 4 doors for elderly parent duties I'd have bought the black museum grade coupe - it's lovely.

The silver coupe is just fine as well though.

You know it makes sense

i love threads like this they just ooooze with w124 goodness:D

I love B12 suspension kit.

I've sampled 2 124 coupes and they left a lasting impression, and a very good one. Real luxury tourers.

The sportline is a bit more tight and modern feeling but still quite soft.

You've got 3 cracking BMWs BTW:D

In the time I've had mine, I've spotted two w124's.

I let one out of a side street and had a nice wave of recognition from the driver the other one was behind me on a roundabout and looked very nice in my RVM.

Seriously considering buying another one for winter use when the E36 is resting in the warm.
