Always great to hear that another 124 has got lucky and found an owner like you who's going to care for it. These days so many of these potential classics are one major bill away from being an ebay parts car. There are less and less people prepared to put real money into maintenance but, as you're finding out for yourself, there are few cars as rewarding when they're running well and looking good. Safe, relaxing, fast enough, comfortable, reliable... and so classy. Don't think there's ever been a better all-rounder than a 124 of any shape. Hope you have a great Summer with your new steed.

On the subject of the interior... I've had mine apart to sort various little faults over the last year with wiring, speakers, bulbs and door check-straps. I've removed door panels, centre console wood, vents, instrument cluster and hatch trim, and more importantly I've had it all back together easily and with no resulting rattles. The windscreen's been changed too, with no ill effects to the interior. It has also responded amazingly well to a thorough deep cleaning - there's nothing brittle, weak or poorly fitted in there at all and everything can be scrubbed and polished back to perfection if you have the time and inclination.

I do notice a bit of a scratchy squeak around the top of the dash just after the car's been on a lift for some reason, but it settles back to silence after a few miles... I've had new cars with more rattles.

Mind you, I used to think Greek islands where were w124's went to die in the hands of taxi drivers.

No. I think you will find most are now in Albania.

I have the 17 inch 124 AMGs on my estate with standard suspension. Its not quite as magic carpet a ride as on the 15s but there is little difference. Personally I would not lower it.

Great cars and glad you are liking yours.

Still think the Cabriolet's are the ones to have, even though the Coupe's look a little nicer in the flesh - all things being equal.......

the saloons coupe and cabriolets are all rascals in comparison to the estate:cool:

When you spend alot of time with the modern BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes you soon get very bored (minus the amazing engines in some of them).

That's when you start appreciating the majic of the older properly engineering machines.

These days they take the soul out of cars with ultra high refinement and total loss of engagement with the engine through drive by wire and almost completely killing steering feel.

It is a shame that alot of these older cars end up as scrap but I am beginning to see a few on the market which are clearly cared for and some are going for serious money.

I do not think the W124 can ever die and the more it ages the better it looks amongst the boring Mondeo/Vectra/sales rep cars all over our roads.

When I drove the carbriolet is has something the Coupe doesn't.

I couldn't put my finger on it but the best way to explain it without sounding strange is 'romantic'.

Yet to drive a 320CE cabriolet. I think that would just be superb.

Impressively quiet at speed too those cabs!

Indeed sir, got that in one!

if its one thing these 124's have the most is character. its going to grow on you even more... Welcome!

On the note on road noise reduction, with a project i'll be carrying out soon, i've been looking into dyna pad. Worth doing some research into it.

It's a two layer application, available in various thicknesses. It's to be used on the floor pan.

You'll find that you won't have any issues with interior trim rattling if they have been previously removed.

I find trim fits so nicely back in place on these.

Congrats on what looks like a lovely car, a great choice! I have an E320 cab, in the same beryl blue as the previous pics. There is also something very sociable about having a four seater convertible!

I did have an E280 estate for about three years, which I actually enjoyed driving more, maybe because of the posture and self levelling suspension, despite having done three times the mileage. 124s are great in any guise, although I've never owned a saloon, and the first Mercedes which made me think seriously about buying.

A little question for you; do you know what the little window is for in your passenger door?

The original W124 look is the best, I'd keep it completely standard.

The standard look and originality of them have really grown on me now after the W124 day.
Especially the cabs!

A six cylinder 124 is so very different to a four cylinder, smoother than the finest Port you'll ever buy. You really need to "Come Taste The Wine", if you know what I mean.........

the service book reminder of next service goes in there. What attention to detail!

Thanks Mike.
Definately agree with the social aspect of the multi seat cab. We were out in central london in my sisters one. Very enjoyable.
Incredibly comfortable in the rear too.
Lots of people look at these. I didnt expect that even though i always look when i rarely see them.

What do you mean about the mirror in the passanger side?

I'm not sure I can stop myself doing something to it. Don't want to give it the 'gangsta look' but want to do something.

Found some 17 inch genuine AMG's already.
Shall I?
