W124 hot cold transmission problem

Hi

I am new here. I have a 91 W124 230CE.

Heres the problem:
When cold, (ie first thing in the morning or several hours since last use) my car pulls of in 1st, regardless of S or E mode. It hangs on to about 4000 revs or so (about 30mph) then shifts to 3rd. It cannot find second. This is even with very light touch on the throttle. Using manual override to select 2nd it still engages 1st. After 1 or 2 miles, it's warm and pulls of in second changing smoothly at normal interval and behaves itself. However, once warm regardless of S or E mode selected, you cannot get 1st with the kickdown from standing start (although kickdown to other gears on the move works fine).

Obvious things done:
Transmission service (fresh ATF and Filter)
Check pressure cable, it is spot on.

Garage that did the transmission service kept the old bits and told me the old ATF was in good condition, not even light brown, still clear/red. No sign of swarf or any debris, no fragments or gunge in the old filter. They said the transmission appears in good order and well looked after.

The problem is consistent and happens like this every day. Does it sound complex/expensive/terminal or something simple, like vauum leak, vacuum modulator or something like that? The engine does run a little lumpy when hot, and smells a bit rich, although with MOT parameters, though possibly not optimum mixture.

Taking the car to my local indie, they want to strip the transmission down and look at sticking valves before even checking the simple stuff like vacuum.

Hope someone can help with advice.

Thanks

I'd check the gearbox operating pressures before doing anything else

Are you absolutely sure it isn't just holding 2nd gear?

Mine does this from stone cold for about 800 yards, though it is 26mph ish and it is second not first. After this it changes to 3rd earlier in E, in S it is just slightly less. My old 300TE was the same.

It won't normally go into first in standard driving.

If you can't select second manually then yes something is wrong.

Hi
How do I check the gearbox operating pressures? Will I need to take it to a transmission specialist?

Its defintely 1st when cold. And when cold, its definitley 1st when you mannually select 2nd. Once warm, its 2nd. You can tell be they speed of the car and the speed of the engine. Its revving its balls off just to get to 25mph when cold! Then its a hude gear gap to 3rd.
Once warm its fine.

Then something is wrong it should pull away in 2nd not 1st.

My 5 speed auto needs to change gear twice from cold at 3500rpm before settling down. this is the same in hot or cold conditions. I cannot manual shift it from 2nd to 3rd either. I beleive this is a common fault on the 5 speed auto.

Vin 320 is yours a 4 or 5 speed auto?
