W124 Humming sound when idle and engine off?

Hi all

W124, 230E 1990 prefacelift...

For a few months now I have been hearing a humming sound that comes from the Rear of the car..
Whenever I drive and stop at traffic lights.. sometimes I hear a hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm from the rear end of the car... and it goes on for about 4 seconds then goes away... Its a deep humming sound. then quietens away...
Sometimes when I park the car and turn the engine off.. after about 2 seconds, the humming just comes... hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm for a few seconds and goes away..
Its louder from the outside but I do not have a clue what it could be??

Any Help would be appriciated

Fuel pump or accumulator. Might be a good idea to change the fuel filter, clean out the pump.

By the way.. does anyone know where the fuel sender is located? is it under the first aid box?

Nono the sender unit..

the sender unit is located inside the tank. To acess you remove the cloth / card covering from behind the rear seats inside the boot. The sender unit is at the top in the center of the fuel tank.

Does sound like the accumulator as Ian says. I would take his advice and renew that filter ASAP.

Start with the filter first and see if the noise goes away? That fuel pump/filter/accumulator comes as a 3 unit rubber mounted assembly so you might be able to pick up a good assembly at a breaker for not too much money if that proves necessary. Get some good fuel line clamps if you don't want a petrol bath.

Yeah i dont want to be swimming in fuel during these high fuel prices haha =)
