hello

looking for a 124 coupe for dad..

2161034.jpg

ideally:

e320 or a e220? pros and cons on MPG in town would be great to hear as i read alot that they are fairly similar
facelift (1994-1997)
air con
sportline would be good but not essential
leather would be good but not essential
electic seats would be good but not essential

simply, wants a car that is simple to use, simple to run, easy maintenance, low headache and feeling solid.

question. was ASR standard or an option on these?
if optional, then would be nice to have it aswell.

dont mind exterior colours, suggestions would be as follows:

blue black two tone
smoke silver
brilliant silver
ruby red
green black (seen an e36 amg with this)
bournite

ideally, low owners.

it needs to be clean and unmolested aswell :)

Any suggestions, would be great.

I have done all the obvious seaches, but nothing suits

Fuel consumption is not significantly different. Neither will be great. The 320 is a much nicer drive but the 220 is lighter and can feel more nimble handling wise.
Most will have leather. To me aircon would be a must. The rest of the spec i would not get too concerned about. Find the best you can condition wise. History is more important than mileage.
What to look for was covered in depth in another thread.

With a W124, I would buy solely upon condition. Engine size and optional extras may come into the equation if there were two or more vehicles that I liked and I needed "deciders."

I think that ASR was an optional extra on early E220/E200s but I wouldn't swear to it.

The W124 coupe is a good looking vehicle.

That green E36 was nice, but sounds like you may need to do a small refurb on it....

E320 sportline would be my choice as these are very sort after and will only go up in value

Sounds as if your dad wants my coupe in Azurite with biscuit leather interior.

Unfortunately I'm not selling.

IT always used to be said that there were three essentials required to be a proper Mercedes:

1. 6 cylinders

2. Automatic gearbox

3. Leather upholstery.

Anything else is "just a nice to have" especially on an old classic.

If he wants reliability and an easy life; stay away from 5 speed gearboxes, ASR (drive by wire throttle system) and probably cruise control and aircon.

I considered buying an E220 in '96. My dealer let me borrow one for a weekend. Lovely car, way underpowered, so it would be the 320 for me without any doubt.

There is a nice example on page 187 of the November edition of Classic Cars.

Seller describes it as a Sportline and up for a quid under 6000.
