Chaps,

Should there be grommets underside on the front, (underneath the first quater cladding).

if i look at the rear drains, i can see grommets there?

i need someone to have a look at theirs or know if there should be.

The reason i ask is because i was cleaning the inside of my Coupe ysterday and lifted out the sound deadening mats.

i wasn't best pleased when i felt the spongy triangular part (upper most bit that sits in the well) was wet. RH

i investigated futher by lifting away the carpet between the kick panel and the sills.

Guess what there was RUST. ive got pic which ill post up this evening.:(

it seems as the water is comming in from the bottom drain hole.

i say this because i went to the car wash matless to see where it was comming from. The footwell stayed completly dry as i observed closely.

not even the Karcher jet seeped through anywhere :dk:

This only leaves me to believe rain/splash water is comming through the floor from this hole.

if i sit in the drivers seat and look down i actually can see the drain hole and the ground.

same on the LH side.

but here is the twist, Mat on the LH side and floor pan is bone dry and rust free but i still can see the drain hole and the tarmac!

ill post pics this evening.

Our estate has some sort of moulding that is angled towards the rear of the car - presumably so water does not splash thru the hole. Feels like a rubber grommet/moulding but not totally sure - car has been dinitrolled in the past.

is that in the front end of the car?

i really think im missing these?!

that would sound right that they are angled as. i'm assuming they look the same as the rears?

Yes. At the front and angled towards the rear. They hang about 1cm or so below the bottom of the car.

GP, this sounds good so far, just what i was suspecting...

but not understanding why the water isnt comming through the the LH side.

Also..I tested out all my drainage holes aswel and water seems to flow out at a constant flow.

however i tested out the sunroof drains the two next to the flap on the corners and the water drains out of the front doors i.e behind the hinge or just behind the piping that holds all the wires etc again at a good pace.

is this right?

Is it supposed to drain out this way? also does the sunroof have rear drains going at the back end of the car?

ok so here are some pics:

as you can see here, you can see straight on to the tarmac, and not to mention the corrosion

ok i'm having trouble uploading pics?

it would be clearer when i get these up..

right here we go...

omg this pic uploading is not happening...sorry about this!

The sunroof drains from the front of the sunroof normally exit from rubber boots behind the front wheels. These can get blocked with debris but can be cleared carefully up the way. However the tubing may have degraded/leaked causing water to exit in the wrong place

Hi Grober,

i tested this and no water came in that way? it seems to disperse via behind the door hinges. if i look hard enough i can see a grommet of somesort which lets the water out.

this happens on both sides so im thinking this is normal?

below is the hole underneath the car where i think a gromet should be. I think water is comming up forom here...

If you are saying the water is exiting from the rectangular hole the cables come through then no it shouldn't. The round hole you show should have rear facing rubber grommet\spigot but to be honest I don't think that is your problem. As an experiment try poring a little water down the front sun roof drain on the "dry side" and see where it exits You may have to partially release the plastic wheel arch liner to see what's going on?

Just to confirm there should be an "upside-down" dome-shaped grommet with a rearward-facing drain outlet. This has nothing to do with the sunroof drain.

I reckon it is placed there to drain any water inadvertantly spilt in the footwell but its absence would allow water to be sucked in, in the course of travelling - if you get my drift...

Graeme, no this is not whats happening.

i tested the sunroofdrains and water is channeling through another exit pipe, in between the fender and inner door frame. No water gets in through there.

also high pressure jet wash test at the car wash proved nothing either. bone dry no leaks.

i'm assuming that this was a problem previously and perhaps the mat has stayed damp/wet for a very long time corroding the area's that we see on the pics.

Or

its comming in through the missing gromet hole, ill need to get these tomorrow.

but as mentioned the passenger side has the same missing gromet but no signs of wetness.

del i get you! i think this is what maybe is happening,

btw, great restore on your's that just looks sublime.

any ideas on how to treat that corrosion in the footwells chaps?
