Hi,
Hoping someone can help identifiy a part I've come across while breaking a 320TE, it was in the front passenger footwell on a metal plate.
10689751_10152706013245419_521894433228384037_n.jpg

The part number is 124 545 62 32 and it says E-GAS on the cover.
After a bit of Googling I have apparently good but conflicting suggestions that this is for ASR, throttle control, cruise control, an ECU for the gearbox and a couple of other less credible things.

I have another 320TE that I'm keeping and wondered if this was a part known to fail or difficult to get that I should keep instead of selling on.

Any help appreciated.

Looks like the cruise control unit.

The VDO part number 412.228 001 029 denotes that.

It's the cruise ECU. There's a cable coming from it to the Throttle Body. You'll probably find the unused plug from the main loom tied up near the TB

The ECU does cruise & also sets the idle speed

Neither car (the one this part came from nor the one I'm keeping) have cruise.
Can it be retrofitted if this ECU is present and the control stalk is missing?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes, but the main ECU is likely to be different and there will undoubtedly be other little details that will be a pain to resolve. The stalk is the very least of your problems, I suspect. You'll need the additional loom for the cruise

Don't 124s with cruise control have different throttle bodies too?

Yeah, That was probably a silly question. I would have run out of talent very early in the process of retrofitting cruise.
Thanks for the helpful replies.

Yes. It even has a different connector as it uses a different loom to the cruise ECU. You'll see a redundant plug on the engine loom on cars with cruise

This applies, AFAIK, to all M104 280s and 320s

I got to know this setup quite well when sorting a car that wouldn't idle. It required a new ECU and a new TB before it would behave.

The idle ECU pulls in a clutch on the TB actuator to control engine speed for idle & cruise. Typical TB faults are damaged / worn out potentiometers, bad looms and burn out clutch actuator coils. Or all three…
