That will come to just under £600 and I will need somewhere to store the car! I think I'll wait and see what Olly says and what the tapping may mean

The tapping is the sign of an engine that has been run without oil and is worn out - honestly.

M111 are normally a very reliable engine.

It's been making that sound since I've had the car and the previous owner (claimed that he) always used Mobil 1 10w40 oil in it (seems that's the one thing he actually did to maintain the car).

I was at a petrol, station yesterday and somehow my car was one of three identical E220 coupes (one was an M-reg, though, mine is an N, but who cares!) and my paintwork seemed in the best nick so at least it looks healthy for now

If the engine is too worn then why doesn't it always tap?

Because when it gets hot the worn cam and scrap big ends start to suffer due to the oil being thinner.

I read on another thread that you're intent on spending £500 on an engine loom, so if you can end up with a good used engine and a loom for £300 surely you're onto a winner?

I'm not intent, I'm dreading it!

Nick.

The time has come to walk away. flog it as a going concern, and find a good base model to slowly bring to scratch.

If you won the lottery, and spent zillions you would still have poorly cared for 220 with a shagged engine.

I walked away from a Golf GTI once for all the same reasons, it even smelled of curry when the heater was switched. It sucked cash like a vegas stag do. But once it was gone I felt soooo much better

I know a tidy E320 at an indie which I'm sure you could grab it for a grand, i walk past I every day.

I'm not being smug here at all. I just feel for you right now, and the prize aint worth the fight.

look at Dels E320 rebuild. Thats the way. Start with a good one and end with a great one.

Dont rip yourself off.

I see what someone's added to the tags...

Now can people stop saying I get a new car and suggest what the tapping sound could be, or does everyone think it's from lack of oil under previous ownership?

I was thinking of a rolling restoration because aside from the wiring harness nothing is "life threatening" to the car, and I will get a new harness (or engine with harness if I find one). Whenever I have enough money put aside I will get a bit done. I can make it a great one with a lot of patience. The interior is as good as new apart from that patch on the back seat and the heating and A/C are working so everything works as it should so I don't see it as scrap material.

Tapping sound = worn out engine.

The key point here is that these engines are plentiful and cheap, so there's no point trying to recon yours, when for a few hundred £££s you could fit a good used one.

You are in London Olly is in Hordean. Ring him, book a slot and go see what he says.

Other specialists are available! Lancashire too far?

Just to add to that (edit function way too slow) Seak out Dash in London he knows his 124s!!

Dash certainly sounds more interesting, though PCS has an excellent reputation but Dash is bound to be much closer for a quick check on what the noise is.

Is Dash his username?

Neil. I am with you on this. Go see Ollie. Get an honest assessment and then make your decision. Everything at the moment is just speculation.

:) Dash is a member on here and thats his username. he's not a garage, but he is a 124 king and has knowledge:thumb:

I asked for a quote from reconditioned-engines.co.uk as they also fit engines. I'm ignoring their warranty as it's only under warranty if you let them service your car but they still look professional

So, some lovely people have added tags "one for the nigerians", "repititious", "turd polishing" and "worthless scrap". Can I point out it's actually spelt repetitious...

Surely rather than making rude remarks about my car and my efforts to get it working better you should actually be helpful?

EDIT: And "scrapheap challenge"

Sorry for the triple post, the user "DASH" is in Yorkshire. is he the one you meant?

Damn... I think I'll have a better chance of getting help from PCS then, but I'm waiting for a quote for a reconditioned engine first
