W124 rear subframe rear mounts

Not sure ...

But the rear subframe mounts do go on w124's . mine failed it's MOT last year on this , and i had to have it done ( £600 ) ...

Apparently the underseal stuff can develop a crack , and lets water in which runs along the rails and just never gets out , corroding the subframe mounts ....

Here is my tale of woe ....

Hi Howard,

I do remember reading about your saga at the time - in fact, every time I look at my subframe I feel a slight worry that I might suffer the same problem. I helped IBW replace a W124 rear subframe last year so I know what a pig of a job it is, too.

Looking back on that episode, are you glad you kept the Whale?

And I'd only whipped my wheels off to have a look at the brake discs and pads... they're fine...

Yeah , the whale's great !

Get a lever in there and waggle it up and down. If there is alot of movement then they are knackered.

Not too much hassle to change if they are worn.

I've been thinking about this a bit more, and reckon I'm worrying about nothing...

When I first looked at it, I thought that there should be no gap - that the subframe should be hard up against the body structure. But that would defeat the point of the bushes - which is to allow the subframe to move relative to the body. Also, the size of that gap is determined by the length of the bolt - not by the condition of the bushes. So assuming the bolt is tight, the gap is right. I think.

Olly - agreed that if the subframe moves too much then the bushes need replacing. I'll take your word that they're "not to much hassle to change"... I assume you mean that, with the right tools, you can press out the old bushes without having to remove the whole subframe?
