I think that there were some revisions made to the W124 series around 1991 ish ? I think this was a slight modification to the grill, headlamps/indicatiors and intro of colour coding ? I understand this took place a couple of years before the numbering change, e.g. the 300E became the E300. Can anyone please confirm exacty when these revisions were made and what actually got changed ?

Im sure those modifications you are talking about hapened in 1994 on the L plate and ran through to 96 on an N .

The original W124 (like the W201) had dark grey rubber rub strips down the side of the car and dark grey bumpers. The first revision, as far as I'm aware (91 or 92ish ??), was to replace the rubber strips with plastic colour coded panels that cover the lower 1/3 of the doors, car etc and blend in with coloured bumpers. The second cosmetic change that followed couple of years later (around '94 I think) was to revise the shape of the front grille and smoke the rear lamp clusters.

I'm not sure what internal trim changes or engine changes went along with which exterior revisions. I'm sure the model history of the parker's guide would give you more details.

Try this site

It looks like it was 1989-90 to me, with the name change in 1993, at least in Germany.

Steve's description of the changes puts this Babelfish translation from the above site to shame -

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">lateral flank protection with integrated lengthen-smolder-learn, new Radzierblenden, in car color painted outside mirrors, chrome border over-half flank protection and the aprons </td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

There's a table of W124 models at the foot of the page with introduction dates in Germany.

I've not found anything as comprehensive for the UK market.

Hope it helps.  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

What exactly did you want to know, as there is alot...

in 1990/91 they changed from the strip rubber mouldings to slab mouldings( which were two tone painted against the body colour), they also changed the sill moulding, at the same time they went from grey plastic bumpers, to painted bumpers (excluding pad) (same colour as slab mouldings)

That is basically all they changed, there were no revisions of the grill/badge/headlamps/bonnet till 93.

Interior wise, they just changed the pattern on the cloth seats, and in terms of leather they went from the strip type leather to the soft piece leather.

They also changed the dark grey ganish mouldings that run round the windscreen and the length of the roof etc, to black chrome ones instead.

There are another few changes but they are insignificant really...

If you want me to list the changes in 1993, just ask.

anything else needed, just let me know. <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Oh, they also painted the mirrors, which were previously just black.

Oh, i forgot about the engine changes...

This is the evolution of the 6 cylinder in the car. up till 90/91 they made a 300E (injection), between 90/91 and 93 they made a 300-24V then in 93 they made an E320 and E280

They also made the 260E up until 93.

They were all straight sixes.

Is the 220 a 16v?
Also, is the auto gearbox on a 93 220CE mechanical or electronic?
If you have the list of changes in 93, that would be fine <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I can write you one, you'll have to wait 10/15 minutes while i think of them all... <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

The 220 is 16v.

The gearbox is not fully electronic.

93&lt; changes...
-Bonnet that goes over headlamps
-Grille that goes into bonnet like a 202 or later instead of over the bonnet.
-Bonnet star that goes into the bonnet instead of grille, such as 202 style.
-Headlamps that have a shaped lense to acommadate the new bonnet/grille.
-Smoked rear lights
-Chrome door handles
-colour coded bumper pads as well as bumper.
-clear indicators and repeators
-Different bootlid, different shape number plate part etc.

Thats all i can think of now...

Actually, thinking about it, i think the 91 models may have had chrome door handles...

You get the rough idea anyway... <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

BTW, there was some silly thing with the indicators between 91-93, i think they were optional to be clear instead of orange, and in 93 became standard on all models... <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
