W124 speakers

These were going to be my next bet. But i picked another pair up from the forum to last for a little while .So i could get the original ones re foamed .

Rainbow do speakers for W124s at various levels. They are fine, a bit more expensive than those.

Let us know how you get on.

Dunno if the example in the link is a competitive price/the going rate but Rainbow (as mentioned) il-x4.7 coaxials are another 'drop in' replacement and are usually a bit less than that from ze German bay, typically £80 - 90 delivered. While pretty much anything may be better than knackered origionals don't expect massive improvements as the origional mounting position is what's wrong... pointing straight into the screen, not big enough (or mounted well enough) to produce much bass without distorting etc

To get a decent improvement you really need to find somewhere to fit a 6.5" midbass driver like for example

Which is how MB did it back in the day. The cheap way would be to say bin the rear speakers and use the rear channel of the head unit to power them and the front channel for the dash speakers. Add a capacitor inline with the front speakers to make a high pass filter & stop them trying to produce bass and an inductor (coil) inline with the midbass drivers to act as a low pass filter. There are various sites around that explain in more depth and/or have calculators/charts for guestimating appropriate capacitance for high pass filters etc for example Capacitors in Series with Speakers
In an ideal world you'd use component speakers which are invidual drivers supplied with crossovers and power them from a seperate amp to get more headroom i.e. the amp has enough grunt to cope with dynamic peaks in music without clipping and producing distortion or even damaging the speakers when the volume is turned up
