Hi there! New to the forum. I have acquired an 1995 W124 E220 from my brother that has required a fair amount of work to get it up to a good driving standard. Having had the car standing for a couple of weeks I noticed a leak of fluid from the steering box; also the box is fairly heavy around the straight ahead but not on lock; this makes me wonder whether it may be worth getting a recon box fitted. I see on eBay there is a company called Steering Specialists Limited up in Wakefield that will refurb. Just wondering if anyone on the forum has had a box refurbed and can make any recommendations? Thanks!

With a steering box the amount of free play changes as lock is applied, there being more on lock than there is straight ahead. For this reason it's important that any adjustment to the steering box free play is only done with the wheels straight ahead. If it's done on lock the steering box will tighten up when the steering wheel is straightened up. Could it be the box has been incorrectly adjusted.

You could ask PCS (Black 55 on this forum). My car was with him and, if I recall correctly, the steering box was refurbished.

He could doubtless arrange this for you.

Quite possible that the box is not correctly set up.... will ask my Merc mechanic to take a look next time the car is in....

You can repair then , with the help of a good workshop repair manual . To find the fpb value on the turn from left to right
