Hi, I am waiting to buy some new centre hub caps for a set of Penta rims that I have I would like to know if anyone knows if standard MB hub caps fit. There seem to be a few different centre cap measurements, from a 66 mm size to 75 mm size.

75 mm appears to be the most common size, but I would like to see where that measurement comes from.

The rims I have are Penta P1690, UK made 5 spoke rims, 8x16 et11, and the cente cap "hole" measures 56 mm at the internal diameter of the "hole", or 75 mm between the outer edges of the "hole".

As I say, perhaps someone could confirm that the normal 75 mm hub cap will fit.

No normal Mercedes center caps will fit these wheels. You will require unique center caps for Penta/AMG alloys.

You can still get the original AMG ones from Mercedes. I'll find the part number for you if you like.

SG1 - I wonder whether you could find a part number ?

I did look at some AMG caps supplied by a dealer in Edinburgh, but they didn't look like they would fit. The seemed to have a raised front, rather than a flush fitting. I should probably try the original items from the 14 inch Mexican hats already fitted to the car.

Mercland, I have a suspicion that you are right. I had a couple of e-mails from a guy in Germany, who deals in classic Mercs, and always has alloys on e-bay, and he is looking for about €200 for a set of four caps. I am not even sure whether they would fit, either.

A couple of contacts that I have, although neither has a set of Penta's, said that a standard 75 mm diameter cap should fit.

Just to close this thread, the centre cap for the Penta P1180 has to be the AMG cap. It is 55 mm centre bore size, and not a 75 mm centre that many other MB alloy wheels use.

Only this AMG cap will fit, and there are no other MB caps that are currently available that will fit, neither are there any old, classic caps either - only AMG

But they do look good !!!

Ian, more pics, the last three, I think.

It's a pity that you can't upload a few more pictures at a time, but howsoever.

Ian, when you stand next to the car it doesn't seem to have changed in its stance. I know the pictures make it look higher, but I don't believe it is. It does ride nicely, feeling more sure-footed on the motorway, for instance, in comparison to the original 6x14 rims.

I may give some thought to fitting new lower springs, but I don't want to go too far from original, and as well as that I don't want to make the ride harder.

But thanks for your comments.

By the way, before you could get near the car you would have to deal with "Big Lion", the fellow sitting on the rear seat. He is pretty bad-tempered, and, as you can see, pretty damn dangerous !!!

Don't worry, it'll only take a minute, sleep easy.. ☺

I don't think that I ever finished this thread, so I am giving the final results !!!

I fitted 8x16 Penta rims in the end, with an offset [if I remember correctly], of 11.

I then put on Continental 8x16x55 tyres, which are a nice handling tyre.

I found that the 8x16 Penta rim sits out on the front. of the car, but doesn't at the rear. In fact, it seems to be the same as the original 6.5x14 in the distance that the wheels are, under the rear wheel arches.

I finally got it about right by fitting a set of hubcentric 10mm wheel spacers, from Mtec in Tamworth [ Vehicle Components Supplier - Tamworth | Mtec ], with 39mm thread 12x1.5 wheel bolts. The standard bolts are 29mm thread length, and when you order the spacers Mtec automatically add the extra length required to the wheel bolt for you.

Now the car looks better balanced all round.
