Hi - after a chance conversation, I have an opportunity to buy a car from someone I know, who is selling on behalf of a relative who sadly passed away. The previous owner has owned the car for nearly 23 years, and was the third owner.

Initially the price range he wanted and the mileage (50k), plus fresh MOT with one advisory for corrosion on a brake pipe made this a no regrets purchase assuming it wasn't completely rotten, but on seeing the car today - i can see in 2002 it had a replacement instrument cluster, and the mileage at the time was 89k. Makes it a much more believable 140k mile car, so at likely 6k-6.5k isn't quite the mega-bargain i hoped.

The car hasn't moved much in a year, and is filthy and still full of personal possessions sadly, but underneath I think there may be a great car there. Now - don't judge me - but whilst I could never think of modifying my R129, I think a 560 SEC is begging to be subtly lowered, and with either 17" or monoblock 18" AMG wheels. So end state would be that, with the key jobs done, and then some happy wafting.

I've done lots of googling over past 2 weeks to try and get up to speed on the larger jobs, but could use some advice:

- Parcel shelf rot. Whilst the bodywork in general is exceptional (had had new wings quite recently), looking up from inside the boot shows a hole, and lots of rust. How much for a future-proof repair, and does this ever risk an MOT failure if left for a bit?

- Seat belt extenders. Driver's side doesn't work. How much of a pain to resolve?

- Rear looks a little low before started. Stupidly, i didn't check it again after a drive. Am i right in thinking the rear would self level when pressurised? Even if there is an issue - would the typical means of lowering one of these effectively by-pass the SLS anyway?

- Sun roof retracted about 80% of the way back. That normal, or should it go all the way? I know fixing or replacing is a big job....

- How much of a pain is it to fix the rear blind? I can hear the motor, but nothing happens.

Otherwise, starts fine, idles beautifully, stops well (and 4k bill from 2017 where discs and calipers were replaced), everything else electrical works, including heated seats. Air con blows cold, no warning lights, and drives well - although pulls the the right a little under acceleration (tyre pressures looked very low tho, which won't help). If i can get for 6k including a perfect plate, I figure even though i don't plan to sell soon - i couldn't go far wrong. What am i missing? :)

Put some pics up?
Rear screen surround rust will not be a MOT failure but not cheap for a decent repair. Paint need...
SLS failures are similarly quite involved, unless you can DIY it.
It sounds more of a 'project car'.

Yes - definitely a project car, it's just the extent of said project is what i'm trying to do the man maths for :)

Unfortunately don't really have the tools or time for much DIY (plus the skills), so would need to get a man in for most jobs. There are some good specialists around here though, and good bodyshops.

Didn't take enough pictures, but one before running, one whilst running, and the worst spot of rot looking up from the boot attached....

The rust doesn’t look awful, seen a lot worse.

The SLS is a fairly simple repair but can be expensive, the shocks are the pricey but if they are gone, the spheres are not too bad. Lowering a car with sls means you have to adjust the levelling ‘lever’ under the car that tells the fluid where to go depending on the height of the car.

seatbelt butler least of your worries

I don’t think the sunroof should slide all the way back, I am guessing you can see the front of the roof panel through the aperture? If the roof is dead then it’s a fiddly but not expensive fix, worst job being replacing the plastic arms that tilt the roof.

I think the price is pretty fair but I’d not class it as a bargain depending upon what’s needed to fix all the bits you’ve found

Nice colour

Top of my head --- to get the car right figure on easily spending another £4-5K assuming no major pitfalls. Its frightening how all the smaller jobs add up. Just how old is the car? The 560, regarded as the most desirable model, started in 85 iirc and was KAT fitted as standard----- the body coloured side trim and bumper would place it post 88. Body condition is paramount so get it up on a lift before committing. If you go into it on the basis of a sound restoration project that would be the correct attitude.

Having just recommissioned my 560sec, which has no rust at all, I would agree with the above that £4-5k will be in the range.
Whilst the mileage is not as nice as you first though, it's not too bad (in terms of the cars value) but bear in mind these SEC's will only be worth decent money if they are standard and done properly. Doing away with the SLS or anything like that will hurt the value alot. MB use to supply replacement panels to fix those parcelshelves, I don't know if still available, rear screen out to do it properly.
Rear blind will need a new cable.. same as radio aerial mast cable so not too bad.
I would certainly say that if you are not planning on doing most of the work yourself, it's not a bargain price.

Good looking car, rare colour. Pease don't change the wheels or lower it.

Rear parcel shelf around £1,000.00. That was 15 years ago when we had ours done. I can recommend a body shop if not to far away which I have used for over 25 years. They looked after my 560. Vanleigh West Molesey 0208 783 1212 Ron or Leigh.

Thanks all for advice so far - 4-5k is pretty much what I had in mind as well, which whilst not "bargain" certainly wouldn't put it in "total loss making" territory. The plate though is very very good, which could be between 2-4k's worth as well, which adds some 'emotional insurance'.

I want to enjoy the car for a while, so it's not one to be flipped, but i've tended to do pretty well with picking older cars and then selling on, and don't want to buck a winning trend...

I think the SLS is likely OK and i was just initially looking at the car without being pressurised, but if an issue i would fix that - but then (sorry again!), would be lowered and on 17s or 18" AMG wheels.

* 4-5k remediation work that is, I.e that is what I figured it would take to get to a decent useable state with no major jobs outstanding

excellent, thanks for the tip. Not many miles (although an 80 mins drive) from where I live, but would always travel for work like this if someone is recommended and has seen this particular issue before

Can’t remember seeing one in white, looks great.

Very 2019 in fact, I saw a car transporter full of new mercs from A to CLS recently all in white and they looked really good.

Wouldn't be suprised if mine isn't far off that condition... but... the contacts above will be very useful, plus it's budgeted for on the manmaths spreadsheet.

Deal done for 6k - pickup in a couple of weeks. Excited...

Nice project, I changed up to 17" wheels with a similar style on my C124 and lowered it slighy too. I love the new look. Go for it .
mb-youngclassics.de do a range of old style wheels of larger diameter.

I'd change the wheels as well, just don't be tempted to bung a set of monoblocks on though as they look shite. Aero 1s or pentas are the way to go or even the Loronser LOs that have been reissued or the best of the lot the Oz splitties. You do not need to go bigger than 17" unless you want to aspire to the chav look.

There used to a white sec round my way with white pentas and a polished lip that looked proper 80s-tastic :)

Yep, aero 1s currently favourite ... and crucially: readily available for just over a grand. OZ Operas would be amazing but can’t see any... plus takes the car very much away from the period (albeit modified) look.
Agree monoblocks just don’t look right
