Hi

The two buttons that operate the rear windows on my SEC have sunk… is this simply a matter of lifting the wood trim surrounding the gearshift and replacing the buttons?

If so, what’s the best way to lift the wood trim?

Cheers

On the reverse of the wood trim is a black plastic backing, which is what the switches clip into. Its likely that has broken or become detached. If you are lucky, you'll be able to reglue it with some good strong glue. The wood panel slides forward, it doesnt pop off. (Many get broken this way i think.)
To remove it, first remove the chrome insert to the ashtray. Then you'll see two little screws that hold the rest of the ashtray in. Remove those (dont drop them into the abyss!) and remove the ashtray frame. Remove the coin tray piece out of the way. That is what keeps the wooden console in place. Slide it carefully towards the front of the car and it should unclip.
Then you can inspect the reverse. (The switches in the console come out on the reverse side, there are little clips holding them there, you may need a tiny screwdriver to *gently* pry the plastic tabs from top and bottom of switches.)
