On my W126 the handbrake works just fine (being a RHD car it has that strange rubber umbrella type contraption rather than the pedal the LHD markets were given). However, from time to time the light stays on when the handbrake is released & you have to operate the handle four of five times before it finally extinguishes.

Does anyone know where the switch which operates the light is located? ..or is it perhaps a faulty sensor of some description? Any thoughts much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it is at the back end of the lever you pull on - you need to remove the panel above the driver's footwell and the kick panel to the right - the switch should be obvious . It may be becoming intermittent due to wear or it may be coming loose on its mounting bolts and not being pressed fully off .

Good luck .
