The cars SORN'd at the moment and uninsured parked up outside my block of flats, we had some windscreens smashed the other night, luckily neither of my cars though. Im looking into windscreen costs just in case and got a quote from Autoglass for £650 and from budget windscreens for £250. Obviously i dont want a rubbish windscreen but then i dont want to pay over the odds either. So how much should an SEC windscreen cost?

Autoglass are usually twice as dear as anyone else, they rely on insurance work, find a small local windscreen firm & go & speak about cash !

They're £450 from MB so if you can get one for £250 your doing ok.

I doubt anyone other than the OEM would still make them now.

scrap yard route ?
£60 for a screen, £50 readies for someone to fit?

Finding one in a scrapyard that's not delaminated, and survives being cut out (they're bonded in don't forget)?

to be honest £450 for an OEM screen isnt too shocking considering its a 20 year old car that they didnt make that many of in the first place

Yup I paid £450 for a Mercedes front screen and had a specialist fit it.

It's the rear screen that's the big bucks.

Give Old School Longcross a phone 01932 873506 for a price, they fitted both of the screens on my 560 SEC. Mine where paid for by the insurance Co.

I can vouch for Old School Windscreens - they were excellent when I used them a few years back and have heard nothing but good reports since :)

I stand corrected, my apologies.

I was thinking of a 123 one when i typed that...

Is the SEC front screen the same as a saloon (SE/SEL) one ?

The rear heated screen on my SL's hartop is a wapping £750 from MB and not available from anywhere else:eek:

I would pay the £250!

So im getting a new screen next monday from National Windscreens through insurance, is it likely that any of the chrome will get damaged in the process?

i got quoted £500 from autoglass for the rear screen

thats not bad going , autoglass wanted £270 for a front pass side window on a W169 A class and couldnt even tell me if it was going to be a genuine one !!

Ended up paying £130 for a genuine glass fitted from RAC autowindscreens.

pays to shop around .. i.e. not Autoglass!

So they eventually got round to smashing yours then, like the others in your area as you mentioned in the first post?

B*st*rds...

didnt get smashed, had 20 years worth of scratches on it inside and outside so i called insurance and explained how bad it was at night time and in bad weather etc and they put me straight through to National Windscreens.

Just had it done today, apart from sending me off with the bonnet partly open, they did a pretty good job. Its made the world of difference and all for only £75 excess. No bent chrome or broken wiper mechanism either :bannana: forgot to ask if they greased the wiper mech though
