my s500 coupe runs smooth when cold but when hot the exhaust blows quite badly and car hardly runs it seems to sort of misfire and go into a limp mode... the blowing is at the flange with the down pipe and the cats before the o2 sensor could this be causing this... my car is a 1993 model 140 coupe.. i was also thinking of doing away with the cats completely, would the car run fine with no cats. thank you.

with regard to your cats i have a w140 s500 saloon and the previous owner an independent mercedes specialist removed the cats on mine in it runs so much better and has a lovely exhaust tone.
he removed the cat pipes cut open the top of the cats pulled out all the ceramic stuff and welded it back on the top edge. therefore when back on the car there is no physical evidence the cats have been removed.

the symptoms you describe could be the cats failing so it wouldnt hurt to remove them
